Traveling Solar Technician
Position Overview
The Traveling Solar Technician (Service Tech) is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, corrective repairs, system commissioning, and advanced troubleshooting on customer-owned residential and commercial photovoltaic (PV) systems nationwide. This role plays a critical part in ensuring long-term system performance, safety, and customer satisfaction.
The Service Tech independently manages time, tools, and resources while traveling to customer sites and working closely with internal service management and operations teams. This position follows a rotating schedule of three weeks on (Monday–Saturday) and one week off, with travel expected during the three-week working period. Travel may occur with limited notice based on operational needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform AC & DC electrical troubleshooting on residential and commercial solar PV systems
- Execute preventative and corrective maintenance activities to maintain system uptime and performance.
- Commission and start up new and existing residential and commercial PV projects
- Diagnose inverter, monitoring, AC system issues
- Perform module cleaning and mechanical repairs as required
- Respond to emergency service calls, including occasional after-hours work
- Work safely at heights, including on rooftops and elevated structures
- Adhere strictly to all company, OSHA, and site-specific safety procedures
- Accurately document service activities, findings, and recommendations
- Communicate professionally with customers, site contacts, and internal teams
- Travel extensively during scheduled work periods, sometimes with limited notice
- Safely lift and handle materials weighing up to 50–100 lbs
Required Skills & Experience
- Experience with commercial solar PV systems and commercial construction environments
- Strong electrical troubleshooting skills and understanding of PV system components
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and plans
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently in the field
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks while meeting service timelines
- Comfort working in physically demanding environments and varying weather conditions
Education & Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Solid understanding of electrical theory and real-world applications
- Prior experience in electrical installation, solar electrical systems, or related trades strongly preferred
- Ability to innovate, improve field operations, and solve complex technical problems
- Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and team-oriented mindset
Preferred Qualifications (Not Required)
- NABCEP certification or progress toward certification
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
- Experience with a variety of inverter manufacturers (e.g., CPS, SMA, SolarEdge, Enphase, Solis, etc.)
- Experience with DAS Monitoring Systems
Work Environment & Schedule
- Rotational schedule: 3 weeks on / 1 week off
- Workdays: Monday–Saturday during scheduled work periods
- Extensive travel required during work rotation
- Field-based role with exposure to outdoor conditions, rooftops, and industrial environments
Pay: $52,000.00 - $83,000.00 per year
