What are the responsibilities and job description for the Spiritual Formation Coordinator position at 1st Congregational Church UCC?
Spiritual Formation Coordinator | Formation Catalyst
First Congregational Church UCC of Salem is hiring a part-time Spiritual Formation Coordinator to nurture the spiritual life of children and families in our congregation. This is a 42-week seasonal position, August 25 through June 15, averaging 5 hours per week.
Who We Are
FCCUCC is a Just Peace, Open and Affirming congregation of the UCC. We welcome all people and are committed to progressive theology, intergenerational community, and justice-rooted faith practice. We believe spiritual formation is not a program — it is a way of life that unfolds across generations.
Where We Are Right Now
We want to be candid about what you'd be walking into. Like many churches, our families with children and youth became less involved during COVID and most did not return. Our last Christian Education staff person left during that period. Volunteers led Sunday programming for elementary children for a few years afterward. We have not had formal programming for over a year. More information available to interested candidates.
About the Role
The Spiritual Formation Coordinator supports the spiritual life of elementary-aged children and their families by helping cultivate meaningful opportunities for learning, participation, and belonging. Because this role is part-time and seasonal, success depends on someone who genuinely enjoys encouraging participation, supporting volunteers, and helping formation emerge organically.
We are not looking for someone to rebuild a traditional Sunday School program. We are looking for someone who can help children feel at home in the life of this congregation — curious, welcomed, and growing in faith alongside adults.

What We're Looking For

- Creativity and flexibility in developing age-appropriate faith formation
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with the Pastor, volunteers, and families
- Commitment to progressive Christian values
- Comfort working in an inclusive, affirming environment that welcomes all people
