Job Description Position Summary As a Senior Life Insurance Underwriter, you will play a critical role in facilitating the sale of life insurance by applying sound, cost-effective underwriting principles. You will assess risk and determine appropriate premium classifications based on a comprehensive evaluation of applicants’ health, financial background, occupation, travel, and lifestyle. Key Responsibilities Risk Assessment & Decision-Making Evaluate new business, reinstatements, and coverage change requests. Determine underwriting requirements and order necessary medical exams or assessments. Analyze applicant data from various sources including MIB, medical records, financial documents, and motor vehicle reports. Stakeholder Communication Collaborate with financial advisors, Insurance Planning Specialists, and Internal Sales Consultants. Clearly communicate underwriting decisions and provide guidance on potential reconsiderations. Process Management Balance workload, advisor expectations and the underwriting team for effective underwriting. Document and update underwriting systems with accurate and timely information. Refer cases to reinsurance or consult with the carrier’s Chief Underwriter or Medical Director as needed. Compliance & Documentation Ensure underwriting decisions align with internal policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements. Draft correspondence including approval/decline letters, advisory memos, and confidential medical communications. Continuous Improvement Participate in the development and refinement of underwriting policies, procedures, and systems. Stay current on industry trends, legislation, and best practices. Qualifications Experience & Education Minimum 5 years of life insurance underwriting experience. AALU designation required; actively pursuing FALU and/or FLMI preferred. Technical Expertise Strong knowledge of medical and financial underwriting principles. Proficient in interpreting underwriting manuals, legislation, and insurance product provisions. Skills & Competencies Exceptional analytical and risk assessment skills. Strong written and verbal communication abilities. Proven leadership and mentoring capabilities.
