Job Title: Public Health Nurse
Starting Hourly Rate: $25.7728/hour
Position Status: Part-Time OR Full-Time
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM*
Position Summary
This position is within the Communicable Disease Program. A nurse in the Communicable Disease program provides a wide range of services including screening, testing, treatment, and counseling for sexually transmitted illnesses; screening, testing, and navigation of services for tuberculosis; and testing, counseling, and navigation of services for HIV/AIDS. The program also provides adult vaccinations, food borne illness investigation and follow up, and contact tracing related to reportable diseases. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
* Occasional work outside of normal business hours for emergency response, vaccine clinics, or outbreak management.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide patient care as it pertains to disease investigations and prevention including blood draws, sputum collection, urine collection, TB screening and testing, vaccine administration.
Provide disease prevention education.
Conduct investigations and follow-up of reported and suspected disease cases.
Interview and triage persons referred for services.
Food borne illness investigation.
Reportable disease outbreak prevention and management
Sexually transmitted illness education, testing, treatment, partner services, and follow up.
HIV/AIDS prevention, education, testing, resource referral
Compile data, prepare reports, and share out data with partnering healthcare agencies.
Follow and assist in development/updating of Standard Orders, Policy, and Procedures
Share in other clinic responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of or the ability to learn the theory and practice of communicable disease investigation, prevention, and control.
Knowledge of or the ability to learn modern public health theory and practices in communicable disease prevention program administration.
Knowledge of or the ability to learn the methods and procedures used in locating, isolating, and reporting cases of communicable diseases.
Knowledge of or the ability to learn the means of transmission of various communicable diseases.
Knowledge of or ability to learn community resources providing services to public health patients.
Ability to become progressively adept at performing epidemiological investigations.
Ability to perform collection of blood and other specimens.
Ability to understand specific medical orders.
Ability to represent the department and program with other agencies.
Ability to prepare and maintain accurate reports and interpret data.
Ability to schedule work activities to meet clinic demands.
Ability to work with clients from varied socio-economic backgrounds.
Ability to read, interpret, and apply state and county policies and other regulations.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, other employees, state and local health officials, community organizations, clients, and family members.
Required Qualifications
Nursing Degree
Illinois Registered Nurse license
Ability to occasionally travel throughout McLean County
Knowledge and ability to work in a bilingual/bicultural environment
Must agree to complete applicable communicable disease training programs
Ability to occasionally work outside of normal business hours
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Nursing or above
Experience in giving immunizations
Experience in TB and communicable diseases
Physical Attributes/Demands
This position requires activities such as sitting, standing, walking, bending, climbing stairs, moving and carrying light objects, operating office equipment, and driving an automobile.
Work Environment
Works mostly in a well-lighted, air-conditioned office. Occasional work in various offsite locations around the county and in a variety of community locations. May have extensive contact with the public. May have contact with persons who may be infected with contagious diseases. Work is performed in an office environment and involves exposure to normal, everyday risks that require normal safety precautions typical of offices. Certain immunizations and/or TB skin test may be required. Tobacco free workplace.
