POSITION SUMMARY:
Performs routine tests in medical laboratory to provide data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease by performing the following duties. Must work independently and as a Team proficiently in all areas of the Laboratory - Chemistry, Microbiology, Hematology, Immunology, Transfusion Services, Urinalysis, Phlebotomy & Specimen Processing.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Consistently demonstrates behavior which reflects that working as a team is more important than self-interest.
2. Complies with the Hospital’s core values of R.I.S.E.
3. Verifies or records identity of patient and converses with patient to allay fear of procedure.
4. Performs routine venipunctures while observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood specimens.
5. Collects and labels specimens within one hour of request.
6. Using manual procedures and/or automated analyzers, conducts quantitative and qualitative chemical analysis of body fluids such as blood, urine, and spinal fluid, to determine presence of normal and abnormal components.
7. Tests and records control specimens which are run with each test.
8. Studies blood cells, their numbers, and morphology.
9. Performs blood group, type, and compatibility tests for transfusion purposes.
10. Must be able to perform microbiology according to Hospital policy and procedure.
11. Analysis test results and questions abnormal and/or unexpected results to ascertain accuracy.
12. Promptly notifies nursing unit (within 5 minutes) of all panic value results.
13. Sends out specimens to reference laboratories.
14. Performs routine preventative maintenance on assigned instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedure.
15. Verifies instrument functioning by checking and calibrating specific lab instruments and documents data.
16. Records on instrument logs any repairs, replacement, and maintenance needed of equipment.
17. Maintains daily work counts and temperature charts.
18. Keeps track of supplies, notifies Director when supplies are low.
19. Clean work areas, stock supplies daily, maintain registration/charge/result files, and such other tasks that may be assigned by the Supervisor.
20. Assures that all tasks performed are in compliance with related state and federal guidelines, rules and regulations.
21. Maintain monthly continuing education articles.
22. Abides by Yoakum Community Hospital policies and procedures as set forth in the Employee Handbook.

24. Performance of other duties, as assigned.
