This Opportunity

WSP is currently seeking an experienced Traffic Engineer for our growing Ohio Traffic & ITS practice. This position will be a key hire to help grow our Traffic Engineering practice, including traffic & ITS engineering design, traffic analysis, and traffic studies. The WSP Ohio Traffic & ITS group serves clients from around the state on a wide variety of projects ranging from signal design and ITS system design, corridor studies, complex roadway projects, and more. This position is an excellent opportunity to continue to enhance design, analysis, and production skills and build relationships within WSP as well as with a number of clients around the state.

Tasks include performing capacity analyses, reviewing studies, and engaging in the design, concept development, and construction of roadways, traffic patterns, and traffic signal design and timing. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Your Impact

  • Perform technical analysis using Synchro, TransModeler, HCS, VISSIM, and other traffic engineering analysis software.
  • Work on traffic analyses and crash analyses for ODOT and municipal projects.
  • Complete safety and traffic studies including corridor improvement studies and interchange modification studies.
  • Work on signal design, pavement marking and signing, and signal optimization projects, as well as traffic engineering projects for ODOT and other clients.
  • Perform professional traffic engineering work and conduct investigations and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, roadways, intersections, signage, signals, pavement markings, and transportation corridors to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
  • Develop and design innovative concepts for strategic intersection and corridor improvements, including near term initiatives and longer-term capital improvement projects and studies that require coordination with authorities, sub-consultants, and clients.
  • Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, and illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
  • Assist with project management duties and development and scoping of small- to medium-sized projects.
  • Interface with staff from a range of other disciplines to support a diverse range of projects.
  • May also support design-build or other traffic engineering projects as needed.
  • Work well individually and with cross-functional teams of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work on mid-level and/or multiple concurrent projects, including budgets, tracking hours and expenses, task completion, cost and quantities of materials/equipment/labor, technical calculations, construction, compliance documentation, and technical analysis memos.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 4 years of relevant post education experience in engineering and prior traffic design experience. 
  • Registered Professional Engineer. 
  • A strong background in transportation planning, traffic engineering design and client/project management 
  • Proficient and extensive knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices, process, and design/build related to traffic control equipment, capacity and operational analysis, project management, and related communications systems.
  • Knowledge of traffic engineering and planning software (HCS, Synchro, TransModeler, VISSIM, ArcGIS).
  • Microstation ORD and AutoCAD program proficiency.
  • Prior demonstrated knowledge and experience of ODOT requirements and procedures.
  • Highly proficient with technical writing and documentation.
  • Ability to work in a corporate environment, communicating with a wide range of professional skill sets
  • Work cooperatively with staff to effectively deliver projects on deadlines, including coordinating with multiple staff working on multiple projects
  • Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Works independently with minimal oversight and provides guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PTOE certification.

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
  • The selected candidate must have the ability to immediately work in the United States.
