This Opportunity

tk1sc, a WSP USA company, is seeking a Senior Consultant (Built Ecology) for our Los Angeles, Irvine, Riverside, and San Diego, CA offices. 

The tk1sc Senior Consultant is responsible for analyzing complex building systems design and identifying energy and sustainability strategies as required by assignment. Responsible for performing energy modeling simulations, Title 24 energy compliance calculations, preparation of building rating systems documentation and monetary incentives documentation, and coordination of energy and sustainable design with other disciplines inside and outside the office. Working with some supervision the Senior Consultant is accountable for accuracy, timeliness, and reliability, reporting to their Coach, Associate or Supervisor.

Your Impact

  • Collect, compile, and analyze data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, schematics, data, technical drawings, flow diagrams, computer-generated reports, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction. Perform professional built ecology/environment work and conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, resources, layout, usage, and systems to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, codes, and construction or operating permits.
  • Participate in incorporating advanced technology, modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, load calculations, and operating strategies to account for the proper construction and functioning of buildings, equipment and systems according to specifications; implementing future-ready solutions with LEED-certified and sustainable building design standards.
  • Participate in verifying the characteristics of a site and providing technical assistance on various design, construction, and integration issues relating to high-performance design, healthy building support, and strategies for zero carbon, portfolio sustainability, and green building certification.
  • Work as an individual or as part of a cross-functional team to execute project work, assist with task completion, calculating costs and quantities of material/equipment/labor, and ensuring project work conforms with specifications, permit applications, schematics, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos.
  • Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, sketches, calculations, technical drawings, spreadsheets, and 2D/3D illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements and calculations, statistical analysis, and reporting.
  • Assist with development and scoping of small- to medium-sized projects.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations that explain research and findings to navigate, improve, prevent, control, restore, or address design, construction, and/or environmental issues or opportunities.
  • Conduct studies and surveys to gain further information on a particular design and construction problem or issue and/or to plan for future needs.
  • Assist in the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of data obtained during site assessments, offering input with developing action plans for low to mid-level risk environmental, construction, installation, equipment operations, and/or mitigation activities.
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Work collaboratively with other professionals, scientists, engineers, inspectors, project control, and technicians on building improvement and development projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Sustainability, Built Environment, or closely related discipline.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post education experience in discipline with prior sustainability design and performance experience. 
  • California Title 24 code and ASHRAE standards. 
  • Creating and critically analyzing building energy simulations for ASHRAE 90.1 and Title 24 compliant energy models. 
  • Knowledge of sustainability principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to project work-related issues. 
  • Working knowledge of third-party green building rating systems (LEED, Passive House, LBC, WELL, or related).
  • Experience with building planning, design, and construction management; including renovation and new design projects.
  • Knowledge of relevant green building construction codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements. 
  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience.
  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
  • Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Experience with discipline-specific design software (i.e., AutoCAD, CAM).
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, load calculations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree is preferred. 
  • Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.
