This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a full-time Chemist for our Buffalo, NY office. Be involved in projects with our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.

WSP is seeking a Chemist focused on environmental site investigations and data analysis for a position in the Northeastern US (with a preference for Buffalo, New York). The successful candidate will be an experienced chemist with an in-depth knowledge of analytical chemistry techniques and will be expected to mentor junior level chemists. The chemist will take the lead in determining analytical and quality assurance requirements for projects conducted pursuant to CERCLA and other hazardous waste or petroleum release response programs, will serve on sample collection teams and coordinate sample management activities during environmental field investigations, will serve as liaison between subcontract laboratories, provide data validation support, and will perform data compilation and analysis. This position will involve report writing, and collaboration with other technical professionals regarding data interpretation and technical analyses.

Your Impact

  • Determine data collection methods for extracting, identifying, and compiling chemical and environmental data from samples of air, soil, water, and other material for research projects, investigations, and surveys.
  • Comply with regulatory requirements pertaining to the data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record compliance and retention.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations that explain research, findings, and recommendations to prevent, control, remedy, or clean-up chemical and environmental problems and contamination.
  • Oversee equipment/tool performance and inventory control.
  • Work with management to develop action plans and for larger scale pollution, corrosion, hazardous waste, and environmental control programs.
  • Provide chemical and environmental risk identification and assessment, offering input with moderate to high-level threat mitigation activities.
  • Assist with overseeing cross-functional teams in executing project work.
  • Interact with existing and potential clients in a confident and professional manner.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in Chemistry or Geochemistry, with 5-10 years’ overall experience related to the requirements for the position.
  • Experience working in a chemical analytical laboratory using gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma equipment and techniques.
  • Strong mathematical / analytical / reasoning skills and demonstrable attention to detail.
  • Experience writing technical reports and communicating findings to an interdisciplinary team.
  • Adept with use of Microsoft Office® programs, such as MS Word® and MS Excel®.
  • Working familiarity with designing and performing data queries using MS Access® and developing and maintaining large relational databases.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for learning new data analysis and data collection software.
  • Willing to perform field work associated with site investigations and assessments on chemically and radiologically contaminated sites. Physically able to pass an OSHA-mandated medical examination for work on hazardous waste sites.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Prior experience with organic, inorganic, and/or radiological validation.
  • Familiarity with USEPA QAPP requirements (including Uniform Federal Policy) and related experience applying protocol.
  • Familiarity with EQuIS® software and the different regional EDD formats.
  • Familiarity with Scribe® and management of data submitted through the contract laboratory program.
  • Intermediate or advanced skills with geographic information systems (e.g., ArcGIS).
  • Experience preparing a laboratory scope of work, reviewing bids, and preparing subcontract paperwork.
  • Current OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification and medical clearance for hazardous waste work. #LI-BJ1
