This Opportunity

Become a member of our Advisory Services/Communications & Public Involvement Team and be a part of a growing organization of professionals. WSP's Communications and Public Involvement Practice is seeking a Community Engagement Coordinator in our Vancouver, WA or Portland, OR office. This is a project-based role, and this person will manage a community engagement team on a transportation infrastructure project.

The best candidate will be an experienced self-starter with the motivation and practice of simultaneously working on multiple and dynamic project deliverables. This requires self-accountability, including smart time management, excellent organization skills, maximizing of resources, and being results driven and proactive with challenging environments. Creativity and collaboration are essential in bringing our clients the most innovative and effective communications ideas, solutions and resources. Experience with public information and community engagement best practices will build authentic relationships with the project's communities. The person in this role should be prepared to create and deliver options and solutions for proactive public communications in a fast-paced environment. 

Your Impact

  • Develop project-based community engagement strategy, development, and execution.
  • Create written content for materials for community engagement and public involvement
  • Work with project-based community engagement teams, including subconsultants and clients
  • Work collaboratively in a dynamic team environment, as well as independently utilizing best practices for public information, including the quick and accurate dissemination of information to populations and partner agencies with limited resources
  • Be comfortable showing discretion and diplomacy with a wide variety of community leaders and members
  • Support the development, production and distribution of essential information, content and updates regarding complex projects
  • Implement strategies to engage all communities, especially underserved and marginalized people, impacted by transportation and housing projects using a variety of tools and methods including workshops, public meetings, market research, public information and advertising campaigns, visuals, and more
  • Offer objective analysis regarding data from community inputs, research surveys, focus groups, polling, workshops, and public meetings
  • Ensure accurate and efficient dissemination of information tailored to different audiences
  • Oversee language translation of materials by internal staff or subcontractors
  • Provide proofing and quality control processes of communications materials
  • Work closely with the creative team, equity team, media team, and public affairs team to ensure streamlined messaging and responsiveness
  • Attend and staff community events and briefings as needed.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (in journalism, English, communications, public information or related field) with a minimum of 5 years post-graduation work experience
  • Work experience within the public or private sector in planning/infrastructure project community engagement
  • Strong writing skills and eye for detail
  • A commitment to and experience with equitable engagement
  • Experience with public involvement and community engagement on planning or AEC projects
  • Experience working closely with clients and technical teams
  • Ability to meet deadlines and be flexible in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience developing engagement materials or campaigns for the public or stakeholders, including written content
  • Excellent writing and public speaking skills and experience presenting information publicly
  • Experience with messaging campaigns and communications plans in the public sector
  • Ability to exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree (in journalism, English, communications, public information, planning, or related field)
  • Membership and involvement in relevant professional organizations
  • Second language

Compensation and Benefits:
WSP provides a comprehensive suite of benefits including medical, dental, vision, disability, life, and retirement savings focused on a providing health and financial stability throughout the employee’s career.

Expected Salary: $90,900 - $105,500

WSP USA is providing the compensation range and general description of other compensation and benefits that the company in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this position based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities in addition to internal equity and geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, or federal law.
