Vice President - Building Structures Discipline Leader - Chicago, IL 

WSP, an award‑winning and innovative multi‑disciplinary engineering consulting firm, is expanding its structural engineering team in Chicago. We are seeking a Structural Team Discipline Leader with extensive experience in structural design. WSP works closely with architects and owners from around the world on a variety of challenging engineering projects, with a focus on efficient and sustainable high-performance projects. Our project span across many sectors of the building industry including higher education, healthcare and labs, high rise, and large-scale mixed use projects. 

Your Impact

The Structural Team Discipline Leader will work closely with the Midwest Properties and Buildings Business Line Leader and on day-to-day operations of the Chicago structural team and assist on the national initiatives. This includes organizing multi discipline project pursuits, regularly meet with clients, organizing in-house resources, develop project proposals and budgets, mentor junior staff, review technical reports/specifications. Additionally, the Structural Discipline leader will coordinate with their counterparts in other WSP offices. 
 
The Structural Team Discipline Leader will be expected to lead multi-discipline teams for key projects as well as participate in developing integrated engineering processes and procedures in collaboration with MEP Systems teams.
 
Project experience should include active participation from the design phase through the final construction close-out.
The position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an emphasis on the ability to organize and present design information to our clients.
 
The successful candidate will be responsible for building and maintaining a network of client relationships such that we receive RFP"s for new work and repeat business from those clients. With the assistance of our marketing department, they will prepare responses to RFPs including preparation of technical fee proposals, preparation and delivery of interviews, development of marketing packages, etc. Participate in internal marketing meetings to coordinate business development activities with other offices and assist other offices as required in the pursuit of work. 

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 15 years of relevant post education experience in the design of healthcare, higher education, science and techology, high rise, and large-scale mixed used projects..
  • Structural Engineer License (SE) Required (multi-state preferred)
  • Advanced proficiency with structural engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, standard of care, and the application to permitting and project work-related issues.
  • Extensive advanced proficiency with building design.
  • Advanced knowledge of relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements, and the business impact upon the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability with establishing, implementing, and managing multiple larger-scale discipline-related programs, documents, projects, and practices for a line(s) of business.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to manage staff, and effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Strategic lateral thinking and strong analytical skills with attention to detail and prioritization of responsibilities in a pressure work environment.
  • Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources, including senior management, clients, and company-wide staff, including those with whom no formal hierarchical relationship exits. 
  • Strong ability to quickly adapt to change and demonstrate flexibility to a variety of schedules and hours to meet business needs.
  • Advanced knowledge and proficiency with office automation, discipline-specific design software, technology, math principles, physics, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools used in the corporate environment. (ETABS, SAP 2000, RAM Concept, RAM Structural System, etc)
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering.
