Responsibilities

The Product manager is ultimately accountable for all the following for their respective product segment(s):

  • Strategy and roadmap development and maintenance
  • Feature definition including marketing, forecasting
  • P&L and ROI management
  • Defining, launching and maintaining product packaging (including pricing)
  • Defining the 'why' and 'what', for the product that the development team will build through definition of features with clear acceptance criteria
  • Informing the distribution of technical focus to market focus collaborating across sales, development, marketing, customer success
  • Mentoring Product Owners, demonstrating regular knowledge sharing
  • Supporting the product lifecycle including monitoring End of Life (EOL) and developing replacement components when needed
  • Ensuring tech support and repair staff are trained in any new functionality which may require technical troubleshooting or maintenance items
  • Understanding some technical details of their product as a system including hardware, software and how they interact to perform the feature functionality
  • Generally responsible for more than 1 product segment depending on size, and scope
  • Product Evangelist: DISCOVER what needs to happen for your product segment and communicate that to all (40%)
    • Accountable for market research (discovery) for your product segment including defining go to market plans
    • Understand the current product features / packages and their value proposition to customers and ensure there is a solid foundation to build upon. Use the product actively like to a customer to truly understand what additional updates/bug fixes drive value.
    • Visit customers, attend trade shows, participate in industry events, and collaborate within Wi-Tronix to understand, formulate and empathize with customers on common challenges / product needs across our customer base and then consolidate and drive product focus areas
    • Collaborate with architecture/engineering teams to define a solution for common customer unmet needs which are aligned with company and product strategy
    • Listen to customer earnings calls and monitor industry trends to enable solving of tomorrow’s problems before customers know they exist
    • CEO of product line - Accountable for defining product vision, product strategy and 3 year roadmap in the context of corporate strategy. Clearly articulate how your product roadmap supports Wi-Tronix 4 revenue principles and meets financial metrics
    • Powerfully inspire others thru effective communication of your defined product vision
    • Clearly define and communicate your product strategy to achieve the vision (including key product differentiation plans, packaging strategy, positioning and pricing) as well as alignment with corporate strategies
    • Lead Lean portfolio reviews to articulate why the company should invest in your product epic. Define and maintain epics and features in accordance with the portfolio management process including lean business canvas, proposed pricing, ROI, continuous competitive analysis, as well as financial objectives (forecasting and costing). Develop and maintain a business case for continued investment into your products.
    • Develop and maintain product roadmap (within overall Wi-Tronix roadmap) prioritized based on impact to the strategy and communicate to internal stakeholders and customers at least quarterly.
    • Says “no” or “not now” to things that don’t align to their vision and strategy
    • Demonstrate thought leadership and be recognized in your product segment through social media posts, webinars, Wi-Tronix user conference and rail industry conferences presentations.
    • In partnership with sales, defines product packaging and pricing and key product initiatives in support of defining and executing account or “win” strategy for customers.*
  • Product Execution: DEVELOP to the strategy (30%)
    • Prioritize building what matters most to achieve the strategic goals and initiatives behind the product*
    • Define, prioritize and implement product features while managing technical feasibility, business viability and market desirability. Ensure each feature acceptance criteria aligns to customer innovation needs, is clearly communicated and understood by development team, optimized for software lifecycle cost and can be validated. Support/mentor the Product Owner in refining acceptance criteria for stories. . Articulate the business value to the product and development team so they understand the intent behind the new product or product release.
    • Scope product features with Product Owners in alignment with product strategy and roadmap.
    • Maintain a backlog of refined and prioritized features at least 1 release ahead.
    • Take initiative to work with Product Owner to document patentable product ideas.
    • Be the voice of the customer and own responsibility for defining, standing by and delivering on decisions on product feature requirements.
    • Engage with development team proactively and often including timely resolution of roadblocks
    • Determine and maintain product segment packaging and pricing by utilizing market research data; review production and sales costs; anticipate volume; cost special and customized orders based on market value and customer willingness to pay.
    • Support commercial team on new opportunity proposals and quotes including input toward larger customer account strategies.
    • In partnership with product marketing & customer success, accountable to communicate product differentiation and value story to customer base.*
    • Collaborate with Customer Success and Product Marketing on early stakeholder and customer validation including appropriate customer accessible release notes, as well as overall rollout plan for new products and features to ensure rapid customer feedback and adoption.
    • Build a team culture which encourages executing more effectively and efficiently, while continuing to drive the pace of innovation of the team. Collaborates with functional manager to provide feedback on team performance.
    • Drive buy-build-partner analysis including defining architectural scalability requirements, and where necessary, review potential partner relationships for the product.*
  • DEPLOY and Measure your Impact: Demonstrate achieved results (30%)
    • Set stretch goals and measurement methods to drive team to high levels of attainment
    • Define quality and product SLI/SLO/SLA metrics to be achieved and measure progress toward accomplishing them – Is the product working to your expectations?
    • Maximize the effectiveness and measure your success through independent initiative and achievement of individual goals and team PI objective results (both development team and product management teams)
    • Mentor internal team members to ensure customers’ service definitions are understood and maintained to contractual expectations. Monitor and measure team compliance with SEV defect and 8D SLAs including a relentless view on improving product quality
    • Reflect and take responsibility to learn from failures to drive a culture of continuous improvement
    • Measure performance to overall Wi-Tronix product KPIs
    • Monitor product fleet, measure product performance, report on ROI for stories/features, and analyze product usage using Google Analytics. Effectively use data analytics to inform the direction of the product.
    • Drive win/loss reviews with stakeholders for your product segment.

    Qualifications

    • BS Engineering Degree preferred or relevant experience
    • 10 years delivering product enhancements in a relevant market
    • 5 years project and budget management
    • Domain knowledge (IIoT rail, transportation)
    • Product Management, Product Owner training / Certification (i.e. CSPO/PSPO) - desired
    • SAFee 5.0 PM/PO Certified – desired
    • Applied Pragmatic Marketing Framework experience- desired
