JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Managing Editor (ME) works as part of a small and nimble team and collaborates with Winterthur colleagues, the University of Chicago Press, and the editorial board of Winterthur Portfolio (WP)  to set and implement goals for the journal. With the Executive Editor, the ME has significant responsibility for soliciting submissions. The ME has primary responsibility for overseeing the processing of article and review manuscripts submitted to WP as well as for edititing articles for substance, grammar, and consistency (combination of content and copy editing) and providing editorial oversight as needed on reviews edited by the Book and Media Review Editor. The ME evaluates and manipulates images for publication according to image supplier and publisher specifications.

The Managing Editor is responsible for managing WP staff time/labor in partnership with the Executive Editor and Division Administrator. The individual in this role will manage the peer review process for articles and will oversee the Editorial Assistant’s implementation of asks, follow-ups, and successful receipt of reader reports. They will also advise and collaborate with guest editors, graduate/editorial assistants, interns, and volunteers. The ME will work with the Executive Editor and Division Administrator to manage the restricted contribution account funded by a revenue-sharing agreement with the University of Chicago Press that is used for reimbursing author costs for images and permissions.

The ME works closely with the Executive Editor, Book and Media Review Editor, staff readers, and Editorial Assistants and Interns. While the Executive Editor sets the intellectual agenda for Winterthur Portfolio and is the public face of the journal at academic conferences and meetings, the ME may also attend meetings or conferences periodically.

Location: While a primary residence in the mid-Atlantic region and the ability to work in the office at Winterthur is a plus, we will also consider remote/hybrid work with occasional on-site visits.

Compensation: $50,000 - $55,000 annually

Benefits: Including, but not limited to, medical, dental, and vision insurance; generous paid time off plan including 10 holidays, vacation, personal, sick time; 403b with employer match for eligible employees; free general admission for you and your immediate family members.

Work Schedule: In general, Monday – Friday, 35 hours/week

Responsibilities:

  1. Solicits submissions and oversees the processing of article and review manuscripts submitted to Winterthur Portfolio.
  2. Evaluates scholarly and historical articles with discernment based on knowledge of the strength of the research and editorial quality.
  3. Manages the peer review process for articles.
  4. Edits articles and editor’s introductions for substance, grammar, and style; provide editorial oversight for edited reviews.
  5. Evaluates and manipulates images for publication according to image supplier and publisher specifications.
  6. Manages WP staff time/labor in partnership with the Executive Editor and Division Administrator.
  7. Works positively as a team of colleagues and with a wide range of authors, students, editorial board members, and other constituents of WP.
  8. Assists with planning and managing budgetary expenses and revenue channels.
  9. Builds and cultivates positive, effective working relationships.
  10. Understands and fosters the journal’s interconnectedness to the institution’s broader mission.
  11. Writes and edits following the Chicago Manual of Style’s editing and publishing guidelines.
  12. Works with a high degree of diplomacy and maintains confidentiality.
  13. Delivers positive customer service and manages relationships with authors, press contacts, and other colleagues

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Experience: 3-5 years of professional employment involving project management and academic writing and/or editing with a BA OR equivalent background and work experience

Preferred Experience: 3-5 years of professional employment with components of project management and academic writing and/or editing with MA or PhD in humanities, social science, design, preservation or related discipline OR equivalent background and work experience PLUS experience in communications, publishing, academic journals, or related activities

Knowledge/Skills:

  1. Must possess strong project management and organizational skills, ability to work under pressure, ability to juggle multiple projects at once, and ability to meet deadlines.
  2. Must possess exemplary verbal, written, and listening communication skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
  3. Must possess technological competence, proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Photoshop, and other related software/platforms.
  4. Must be team-oriented and enjoy working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment and with internal and external stakeholders on initiatives and goals.
  5. Demonstrated experience in DEAI initiatives and equity-focused projects.
  6. Demonstrated academic and/or professional work in humanities, social sciences or related disciplines.
  7. Demonstrated knowledge of US history in a global context and of related disciplines
  8. Experience with original research and familiarity with relevant research tools and resources.
  9. Experience with scholarly editing and writing.
  10. Knowledge of print and digital content production, including layout, design, and print and digital production.
  11. Strong interpersonal and human relations skills.

Essential Functions:

  1. Ability to work up to 8 hours a day at a computer.
  2. This position is subject to managing competing deadlines and priorities.
  3. Ability to travel occasionally (and interest in doing so).

ABOUT WINTERTHUR PORTFOLIO:

Winterthur Portfolio (WP) is a peer-reviewed academic journal of American material culture that has been published since 1964 and is run by a small staff within the Academic Programs Department at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library. It is published in partnership with the University of Chicago Press and is advised by an editorial board. The journal is a major part of Winterthur’s national and international academic brand. The Managing Editor edits with an eye toward the mission and needs of WP’s broad audience of academics and general readers, with special attention to classroom use.

Winterthur Portfolio is committed to using its pages as a platform for the intellectual work of all who study, think and write about, make, care for, and use material things. WP actively seeks the contributions of people who have been underrepresented in this journal and in material culture scholarship writ large. 

The WP team strives to publish works that frame “American material culture” in broad terms that challenge the structures of racism, white supremacy, patriarchy, misogyny, heteronormativity, gender normativity, and ableism. The journal is committed to providing an intellectual space that presents diverse material histories push its staff and our readership to continuously redefine and expand a shared understanding of this inherently interdisciplinary field of study. 

In service of these goals, WP recently introduced guidelines for inclusive identity language, implemented modest honoraria for contingent faculty and non-academic book reviewers, and has created instructional videos to welcome prospective authors and reviewers. The ME works with the WP team to support and expand on equity initiatives and the vision for the journal and at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library.
