Responsible for providing nursing care, administering medications, and documenting care in the patient's medical record for a designated group of patients under the direction of the medical provider. Under the general clinically supervision of medical provider and administrative supervision of the Practice Manager. The employee is responsible for providing nursing care on assigned shift utilizing the nursing process and age-specific needs. The employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital.
Performs specified patient care with a high degree of skill, minimal discomfort to the patient, and minimal supervision. If IV Therapy covered in LPN school curriculum and competency demonstrated, may initiate peripheral IV access and administer IV flushes and IVPBs to patients according to hospital policy; administers medications and treatments, prepares for tests and surgery, and assists physicians with procedures and examinations according to hospital policy. Must successfully complete a formal 40-hour intravenous therapy training competency program through Nurse Education after six months of employment with the hospital or provide a 40-hour certificate from employment with the previous hospital before being allowed to administer IV push medications. Receives and transcribes the physician, FNP, PA orders as appropriate. Contributes to the development, implementation, and continuing evaluation of the patient care plan. Identifies, records, and reports any change in patient condition or adverse reaction to treatment and/or medication to the medical provider. Documents care in the patient’s record. Respond to medical emergencies, initiate CPR or appropriate action, and notifies appropriate personnel. Orders patient supplies and completes referrals for patients. Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
EDUCATION: Completion of a vocational school LPN program.
LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse as approved by the Tennessee Board of Nursing for practice in the state of Tennessee.Responsible for Continuing Education Units annually.BLS certification must be obtained within the orientation period, and certification must be kept current while in this position.Special certifications may be required at the department’s discretion.
EXPERIENCE:Proficiency in pharmacology and documentation and the ability to demonstrate nursing skills according to current hospital and nursing policies and procedures as normally acquired through the successful completion of documentation class, pharmacology exam, and skills exam.
