Product Design Engineer

Purpose

Carry out product design and development assignments of a routine to moderately complex nature with some latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment under moderate supervision. Prepares sketches and completes detail and layout drawings from verbal or written instructions on product. Participate on cross functional teams, working with Project Engineers, Industrial Design, and Product Marketing to refine product requirements and deliver designs that balance cost, performance, and reliability. Prepares layout, detail, and assembly drawings independently and with support from internal designer resources. Various calculations such as strength of materials, simple forces and stresses, and weights, may be required.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Job Functions)

  • Design products to specifications and schedules for new products, cost improvements, and other business objectives.
  • Develops Computer Aided Design (CAD) models of parts and assemblies and uses Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) software to optimize them for performance, quality and manufacturing.
  • Use various tools to develop concepts for review/discussion with other departments, specifically marketing, project engineers and manufacturing.
  • Partners with project engineers and industrial designers to ensure safety, product performance and aesthetic intent are met.
  • Works with internal and external suppliers to refine the product design and optimize it for manufacturing.
  • Participate in the creation and validation of prototypes to prove out design concepts, design changes, etc.
  • Understands and applies federal, industry and internal standards and ensures products meet safety, compliance and performance requirements.
  • Recommend and drive design improvements for cost, manufacturability and/or quality improvements on legacy products as needed.
  • Develop layouts for medium scale programs to assist in the development of new products and/or sustaining engineering activities. This would include several concept options to full development of a solid model that represent ideas of the project team. 
  • Supports validation plan development, costing and capital expenditure activities and adjusts designs to meet program targets.
  • Supports delivery of designs in accordance to WernerCo product development processes and milestones.
  • Designers will take direction primarily from sr. engineers, managers or directors.
  • Understand and follow Quality Management System.

Experience & Education

  • BSME or similar
  • Three to five years of designing components, assemblies and/or products utilizing CAD (AutoCAD 2D and SolidWorks 3D preferred) and product design fundamentals. Ability to finish design concepts with dimensional and GD&T features.
  • Knowledge of consumer product development process including injection molding, forming, and/or extrusion, preferred
  • Working knowledge of FEA or other CAE skill preferred
  • Computer Skills – Intermediate PC software knowledge, specifically MS Excel and Word.

Travel Requirements
