Adventure Learning Instructor

Climbing Wall Instructor & Manager
a. Teach Physical Education courses in the PE curriculum
b. Coordinate all aspects of climbing wall operations
c. License & Inspections
  • Full responsibility for risk management of an indoor climbing wall. Excellent oral and written communication skills, and supervisory experiences with students, staff, and/or participants.
  • Holds the Wellesley College license for the 750 sq.ft. climbing wall which was built in August 2011 by High Five Adventure Learning. Coordinates and oversees the inspection schedules, working with the Associate Director for Facilities and Operations.
  • Responsible for all inspections conducted as per manufacturer’s recommendations and accepted industry practices.
  • Daily Inspections (Informal): Ropes, harnesses, climbing holds, carabiners, belay devices, and climbing wall structures are to be informally inspected by staff and patrons as part of the daily use of the climbing wall and ultimately each piece of equipment used. The informal daily inspections are not recorded unless a problem is discovered.
  • Bi-Weekly Inspections (Formal): Soft goods: Ropes, harnesses, and anchors are formally inspected on a bi-weekly basis. Inspection findings are recorded in the inspection log for each piece of equipment and documented in inspection logs.
  • Monthly (Formal): Hardware: carabiners, belay devices, quick links, and belay lines are formally inspected on a monthly basis. Inspection findings are recorded in the inspection log for each piece of equipment and documented in inspection logs.
  • Bi-Annual (Formal): The overall climbing wall and bouldering arch structures are formally inspected yearly by a certified department of public safety climbing wall inspector. Inspection findings are part of licensure.
d. Recreation Climbing
  • Facilitate the Rock Climbing Recreation program from 3 - 6 hours per week during Terms 2 (mid October - mid December) & Term 3 (end of January - end of March) during the academic year.
  • Oversee hiring, training, scheduling and supervising of student staff.
Outdoor Pursuits Instructor and Rental Center Manager
  • Coordinate and lead outdoor pursuit day trips each semester: identify site locations, manage transportation and on-site logistics.
  • Collaborate and facilitate wellness and outdoor experience initiatives to programs such as New Student Orientation, Madeline Albright and Hillary Clinton Institutes.
  • Schedule and implement the annual outdoor programming calendar.
  • Recruit, train, verify certifications, supervise and evaluate student staff; responsible for the skill development through instruction, guidance, and feedback to support growth and ensure program initiatives are accomplished.
  • Ensure risk management best practices are followed.
  • Responsible for inventory, maintenance, sanitization and replacement of outdoor pursuits and rental center equipment.
  • Propose academic year annual budget for trip operations as well as equipment replacement, repair and renewal.
  • Assist with long-range strategic planning and assessment; develop and administer assessments/evaluations related to student development programs and learning outcomes; maintain accurate participant and program data and annual reports.
Recreation Coordinator Responsibilities
a. Assist in the coordination of all aspects of the Recreation program
b. Assist with Marketing, Communications & Promotions
  • Create and post content on Recreation social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) and assist with tracking post analytics.
  • Create and send Recreation community email newsletters.
  • Provide calendar management and adherence to deadlines for promotional materials.
  • Advertise and recruit student participation in Recreation programs.
  • Assist with registration forms and software system utilization.
c. Assist with Open Recreation
  • Responsible for inventory, maintenance, sanitization and replacement of open recreation equipment.
  • Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate student staff.
  • Meet with students interested in creating new recreational activities.
d. Assist with Special Events Programming and Club Sport Competition Supervision
  • Assist Director of Recreation with programming during First Year Orientation and Reunion.
  • Assist with Special Event programs oversight and operations including student staff, marketing, registration and site supervision.
  • Act as the first responder to emergencies as they occur and ensure the initiation and follow through of the Emergency Action Plan.
  • Report proper documentation of all injuries, incidents, and problems that arise on site.
  • Supervise the oversight of athletic facilities and assist and/or supervise in the coordination of site preparedness, field set up and breakdown and facility/equipment monitoring.
  • Responsible for the safety of special event participants, employees, facilities and equipment.
  • Communicate problems (present or potential), needs and suggestions to the Director of Recreation.
  • Serve as the on-site administrator responsible for Club Sport competitions when the Director is unavailable or as assigned.
Department Responsibilities
  • Support the mission and programming of the department and engage with colleagues
  • Attend PERA department meetings
  • Serve as a member on the Recreation Committee (monthly)
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Recreation or Director of Athletics/Chair of PERA
Certifications
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification Required
  • WMI Wilderness First Responder Certification preferred
  • CWA or AMGA certification preferred
  • Valid driver’s license and clearance to drive College vehicles (driving record check required)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrate experience in Rock Climbing instruction.
  • Possess the ability to instruct outdoor skills -small group facilitation.
  • Possess wilderness medicine and/or strong first aid experience.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively and positively with a wide range of constituencies.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective, working relationships. Exceptional customer service orientation is essential.
  • Demonstrate strong problem solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems as well as devise solutions. Must also be able to work independently as well as to work collaboratively.
  • Possess strong organizational, planning and time management skills with the ability to manage concurrent projects and handle multiple priorities at once. Must also have a strong focus on attention to detail. Strong project management skills are essential.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: bend, crawl, reach above shoulders, carry lift over 25-50 lbs., squat, climb, kneel, push/pull, walk for long distances.
The Adventure Learning Instructor/Recreation Coordinator reports to the Director of Recreation.
Other:
  • This position requires non-traditional work hours (noon-8 PM daily) with additional evening and/or weekend supervision due to the nature of program activities.
  • This position is a one-year renewable contract position. It is an academic year, 10 months role working from mid Aug - Mid June (to cover Orientation and Reunion).
