The Part Time Project Engineer will be an experienced technical product development leader within the Engineering Team, playing a key role, working with the Product Manager, to deliver new products that meet the changing market needs. The Project Engineer will be responsible for delivering New Product Development (NPD) and other special projects on time and on budget. The Project Engineer is a balance of technical project management, system engineering and technical expertise. The Project Engineer will develop plans in collaboration with the Product Manager and execute these plans with the assistance of Design Engineer, CAD Resources and Pilot Manufacturing RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: Technical Project Management Ability to plan a project; identify, understand and assess the risks; build a team; set timely milestones; report on progress; identify issues early and ask for help Effectively communicate beyond the technical team, to other business stakeholders and customers in written and oral form, adjusting level of detail to needs of audience Ability to use empathy to motivate, ability to exert influence without control Know who the customer is (external customer and internal stakeholders) and so what compromises might be available or necessary Responsible to work across the entire engineering organization and across functions (Product management, finance, Operations, Sourcing, etc) to ensure delivery of the programs within the agreed time and budget Collaborate/support the product manager through the Stage Gate process Accountable to develop, review, and manage and report on product development timing plans, OPEX and CAPEX budgets, from concept generation through PILOT and pre-production Advise Product Management on the technical value proposition of NPD concepts to our customers. Evaluate and tackle difficult problems that impact the overall success of the program. Determine the appropriate path for the projects, organize and facilitate necessary team meetings, producing minutes, action items and keep the management adequately informed. System Engineering – Concept and Solution Development Accountable to develop an engineering system architecture and be able to see multiple solution paths that involve fast to market possibilities for NPD solutions – be able to step back from the problem and see the bigger picture Understand that projects involve mechanical, electrical and software components and how those components can be executed in parallel Accountable for the development and execution of product and system solution Problem-solving, roll-up-the-sleeves style, ability to break down problem into components (analysis) and piece together individual components into a cohesive whole (synthesis), ability to distinguish causality from correlation Technical Expertise Must have a solid understand on the fundamentals of fluid flow, fluid solid interactions, mechanical mechanism and be able to communicate on electronic and cloud implementation Know what steps must be completed and in what order. The Engineering Manager, NPD ideally understands the necessary analysis, must be able to review and challenge assumptions / results. Accountable to develop, review, and approve engineering documentation for new products including technical specifications, detailed drawings, material specifications and performance requirements. Organize and document analysis results. Assist with interdepartmental technical questions, document review and creation for related products. Evaluate the technical feasibility of new product concepts, interpret finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics to optimize performance with consideration for manufacturing or purchasing. Coordinate or perform comparison bench marking between current and new or similar products to determine the possible advantages/disadvantages of one over the other. Provide technical support during new product launch and initial production period. EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic experience or Master’s Degree a plus. MANAGEMENT: No direct reports, project supervision of technical staff Design Engineers, Engineering Co-ops and Rotational Engineers QUALIFICATIONS: 10 years of product development/design experience, preferably in fluid-handling applications Engineering Project/Program Management Experience Excellent interpersonal, influence, and inspirational skills required for interaction with employees, suppliers, customers, regulatory staff and management Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with cross functional technical teams, business organizations, vendors and upper management staff Previous engineering experience in a manufacturing environment is a plus Familiarity with national codes and certification agencies would be a plus Experience with project cost estimating and program accounting practice Exposure to and ability to grasp new technologies and engineering/manufacturing processes involved in product development Team building and team leadership Watts is committed to equal employment opportunity.
