SUMMARY

Working under the supervision of the RN and delegator authority of the surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective management of surgical procedures by possessing the expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique. Handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. The CST has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon while having the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is vigilant for maintenance of the sterile field.

• Participate in ongoing educational and competency verification activities applicable to scrub personnel
• Able to troubleshoot instruments and equipment
• Clean and prepare surgical instruments for processing and transport them to the decontamination areas
• Inspect and take care of surgical instruments on the sterile field
• Maintain an organized sterile field
• Anticipate surgeon needs during procedure
• Assists with surgical draping of the patient
• Assist with post-procedure cleaning of the operating suite and preparation of room for subsequent patients
• Remains available for call when assigned and responds promptly as needed
• Maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information
• Participate in surgical site and patient verification during timeout
• Prepare, check, and monitor medications on sterile field
• Reviews and identifies revisions to the surgical preference cards for designated service
• Assists with planning and conducting department orientation of new staff and students
• Sets up OR with instruments, equipment, and supplies specific to procedure

Job Requirements

REQUIREMENTS

• High School Diploma or GED
• Certification in Surgical Technology
