Voices for Children is a respected, local nonprofit organization focused on fulfilling our mission to advocate for the needs of children in foster care. ABOUT THE POSITION & IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Marketing & Communications Manager reports to the Director of Marketing & Communications and is responsible for managing and implementing marketing and communications strategies that support Voices for Children’s (VFC’s) mission and strategic goals. The Marketing & Communications Manager is an essential part of the VFC team and works in collaboration with internal departments and teams (e.g., Philanthropy Team, Recruitment Team). This role takes the lead in marketing and communication activities.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a journalist’s mindset and gift for authentic storytelling. They enjoy getting out into the field and creating dynamic and persuasive, mission-rich stories and content that speak to the heart of our work and can be re-purposed across multiple channels.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Social Media

  • OWN content strategy and implementation for Voices for Children’s social media channels.
  • Create, draft and schedule publication of authentic, compelling and timely posts, graphics and videos on each of VFC’s social media accounts at the appropriate intervals for each platform. Provide tactical support and high-level strategic counsel as needed to team members regarding social media needs.
  • Social Media Community Manager: Interact with and respond to VFC’s social media audience, build VFC’s awareness and brand through an engaged following, develop relationships with influencers, and drive measurable action and growth.
  • Conduct on-site social media for special / community outreach events and organizational initiatives including crafting and posting real-time content, conducting interviews, and taking compelling videos and photos. Package assets for media deployment and event recap eblasts.

Project Management

  • Serve as editor at large for The Voice newsletter (2x issues a year). Help storyboard, conduct interviews with key partners, volunteers, and collaborators, craft main story (750-1,000 words) and other shorter vignettes, assign content to team collaborators, identify photos and graphics, edit copy, and meet editorial deadlines. Work with graphic designer to layout issues and manage approval process.
  • Serve as a lead project manager and collaborator on marketing / fundraising campaigns, event marketing, video production / editing, and other marketing projects as assigned.
  • Write, edit, and proofread copy / communications across the organization. Provide strategic input, share knowledge and best practices with the team as needed.
  • With great attention to detail, work efficiently and collaboratively on multiple projects, set and meet deadlines, and maintain excellent proactive communication with various stakeholders.
  • Work with design, print, and merchandising vendors as needed to bring creative projects to completion.
  • Collaborate with the Philanthropy Team to support organizational fundraising goals through marketing and communications activities.
  • Collaborate with the Volunteer Recruitment team to support organizational CASA recruitment goals through marketing and communications activities.

Content and Creative Development & Communications Management

  • Produce written content, design collateral, and video content for various electronic and print communications, including VFC’s blog, eblasts, biannual The Voice newsletter, website, annual Impact Report, advertisements, VFC internal communications, and other media as needed.

  • Maintain Constant Contact database: Create and deploy all organizational eblasts. Stay up to date on best marketing email best practices and implement and share with our team.
  • Conduct in-take interviews to propel organizational storytelling.
  • VFC blog. Curate compelling content, video and graphics and create and post (2-4 blog posts a month).
  • Create video recaps from all major fundraising and community events: Uplifting Voices, Fostering Hope Golf Tournament, Starry Starry Night, Real Word, etc.
  • Create and update organizational creative collateral.
  • Help write and/or edit press releases, media advisories, photo captions, backgrounders, bios, community award nominations, community articles and develop story ideas and pitches as needed.
  • Create forms on website as needed.

Metrics, Reporting & Data Analysis

  • Assist with tracking marketing metrics, reporting and activities to help the team measure progress and evaluate priorities.
  • Track, measure, and report on the level of engagement and actions taken by website visitors.
  • Remain apprised of changing trends in marketing, particularly social media, website engagement, and email marketing.
  • In collaboration with Director of Marketing, create a yearly Marketing sizzle reel video to report back on organizational success.
  • Provide general administrative support to the Director of Marketing & Communications.

Other Duties

  • Serve on VFC committees (I.D.E.A.A. Council) and attend meetings as requested by the Director of Marketing & Communications and/or leadership team.
  • Continually work to further the mission and vision of Voices for Children.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned by the Director of Marketing Communications and/or leadership team.
  • Research and assist with the creation and ordering of new promotional products / marketing collateral as needed.

COMPENSATION & WORK SCHEDULE

Starting Pay Rate for this position is $64,480 - $66,414 per annum D.O.E.

Standard work week for this position is 40 hours; however, employees are expected to work any additional time necessary to meet deadlines and complete assignments. Evenings and weekends may be required. Additional hours are subject to overtime pay. The VFC office shall be open for business during the following hours, except as hereinafter noted: Monday through Friday: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Coverage at the office by the program and office staff shall be according to such schedule as developed by the President & CEO. This position is based out of the VFC San Diego Office. Positions at VFC now have the opportunity for remote work. Remote work and in person work are determined based on a variety of factors including but not limited to performance, operational demands, essential duties, and responsibilities.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Essential Criteria

  • A minimum of 5-8 years of related work experience required.
  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (e.g., year for year experience in lieu of a degree. Completion of a certificate program in related fields)
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with using written, multimedia, and video storytelling to create innovative and engaging content in support of the organization's marketing goals.
  • Proven track record of managing organizational social media platforms, particularly Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
  • Proficient with current Microsoft Office programs, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience and basic tactical understanding of Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop preferred. Ability to update existing organizational design files and templates.
  • Experience creating and editing videos and presentations using a video editing software such as Adobe Premiere.
  • Experience in website Content Management Systems, particularly WordPress.
  • Experience in email marketing platforms is a plus, particularly Constant Contact.
  • Experience with creating visual assets and repurposing existing templates for a wide variety of marketing platforms (e-mail, social graphics, events, etc.) using design platforms such as Canva.
  • Highly organized, true self-starter, adept at multi-tasking and managing multiple projects at once.
  • Able to work independently with minimal oversight and as an effective and gracious team member. Thrives in a fast-paced, high-collaborative environment, and has the discipline and skills to work in a remote or hybrid environment as needed.
  • Have a valid California driver’s license and automobile insurance as well as access to an automobile for local travel (San Diego and Riverside Counties).
  • Reside locally (San Diego County area) and be able / willing to regularly and reliably report in person to VFC work sites, meet and coordinate with vendors in San Diego County, and complete various other job-related tasks in San Diego County as needed.
  • Able and willing to report in person to complete work-related tasks and attend VFC events and activities in Riverside County.
  • Meet all security-screening requirements as set forth in the California Rules of Court, Rule 5.655.
  • Must be able to furnish work samples to demonstrate essential criteria of the position.

Preferred Criteria

  • Familiarity and knowledge of AP Style guidelines.
  • Work experience as a working journalist or social media / content manager.
  • Work experience in a nonprofit setting.
  • Work experience at a for-profit marketing or public relations firm.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

The physical demands and work environment described are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential function of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions.

Physical Demands: 1.) Able to occasionally lift, carry, push, pull 25 lbs.; 2.) Able to regularly bend and stoop; 3.) Able to constantly sit for prolonged periods of time (up to 7 hours per day); 4.) Able to constantly sit at a desk and view a computer screen for up to two hours at a time / 7 hours per day; 5.) Able to consistently speak into and use a telephone for long periods of time.

Work Environment: 1.) Professional office environment; 2.) Small team environment; 3.) Fast paced working with multi-level distractions.

Special Conditions: 1.) Able to regularly work extended hours as needed, including nights and weekends during special events; 2.) Occasional driving in San Diego County required. Limited driving in Riverside County.
