Reporting to the Biosafety Officer, the Biosafety Assistant provides support monitoring and coordinating a comprehensive Biosafety Program at Vitalant Research Institute (VRI). VRI is one of the largest blood-center-based transfusion medicine research programs in the country and is among the leading programs in the world with respect to transfusion-transmitted infectious diseases.

Duties include:

• Conduct routine inspections, such as fire extinguisher checks, first aid kit checks, satellite accumulation area checks, safety shower and eyewash flushing, sterilization process and spill kit checks
• Order Biosafety Program materials, such as first aid supplies, spill kit supplies, signs, labels, etc.
• Maintain specific documentation, file hazardous and biological waste manifests, conduct hazardous material inventories, maintain SDS files, and/or other support functions
• Assist with specific trainings
• Special project work such as chemical inventories and space or equipment decontaminations

Preferred qualifications and skills:

• Enrolled in an undergraduate level science program at a college or university
• Experience working in a laboratory
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
• Ability to work both independently and in teams
• Client service mentality

Job type

This is a part-time, 6-month appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing institutional needs. Part-time, non-exempt (hourly rate) no overtime.
