Virginia Zoological Society is Hiring a Volunteer Coordinator Near Norfolk, VA

Description

Under the direction of the Volunteer Programs Manager, the Volunteer Coordinator will coordinate the logistics of all volunteer programs at the Virginia Zoo, including by not limited to recruitment, scheduling, retention, evaluation, and daily supervision. The Volunteer Coordinator serves as the primary point of contact for all Virginia Zoo volunteer program participants. The Virginia Zoo’s Volunteer Programs include our Zoo Crew (adult 18 ), Conservation Youth Team (CYT – a teen volunteer and youth development program), group, and episodic volunteers.

POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with the Volunteer Programs Manager to recruit, interview, and on-board new Zoo Crew, CYT, group, and episodic volunteers
  • Communicate accurately and in a timely fashion with Virginia Zoo volunteers through emails; The Better Impact Volunteer Management software, and other resources and act as a conduit for feedback from volunteers to management and staff
  • Regularly updates volunteers resources, including the Google Drive and Weebly website
  • Coordinate with other Zoo department to identify needs, post, and fill opportunities for volunteer support
  • Collaborate with the Volunteer Programs Manager to implement assessment tools to capture program effectiveness and evaluate retention
  • Assists the Volunteer Programs Manager with scheduling and supervising volunteers, performing performance appraisals, and diplomatically addressing performance issues including separation from the program
  • Supports other Education Department and Zoo-wide initiatives
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Part-Time; 32 hours per week. At least one weekend day require per week (Saturday or Sunday). Flexibility required for some evening and holiday work.

Requirements

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITES

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education and/or experience.

  • At least 2 years of higher education or experience in volunteer management, program management, or customer service
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working with a broad range of people in a customer service or people management capacity
  • Knowledge of and experience in volunteer management concepts and best practices or a demonstrated ability to learn
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience with Better Impact or another Volunteer Management Database preferred
