Senior Mechanical Engineer Position Summary

The Senior Mechanical Engineer develops, maintains and produces technical designs, documentation and system/subsystem specifications. The candidate will analyze engineering problems, proposes solutions and alternatives, and solve complex mechanical engineering problems with little technical guidance. Additionally, the candidate will document work efforts, to include Test Procedures, Engineering Change Proposals, specifications/standards, etc. This role has responsibility for supplying support and providing direction/guidance to the design engineering group as well as hands-on design in new product introduction to ensure new and existing design meets manufacturing standards and capabilities. The Mechanical Engineer is recognized as a technical leader and resource for advanced manufacturing.

Responsibilities

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for:

• Engineering Support-Legacy Products
  • Applying engineering best practices and tools to design mechanical and electromechanical components and assemblies including machined, sheet metal and plastic injection molded parts
  • Creating and managing mechanical design package documentation including 3D assembly solid models, component models, assembly documents, component fabrication drawings, and BOM.
  • Creating and maintaining CAD libraries
  • Designing components or functional systems and modifying existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations and higher yield rates
  • Leading design development and optimization through prototyping, modeling, simulation, and analysis of existing designs
  • Recommending alterations to development and design to improve quality of products and/or procedures
  • Determining and developing test requirements for components, assemblies and systems as required; supports verification and validation testing
  • Supporting maintenance of design history file for assigned projects, adhering to Violet Defense design control procedures
  • Administering and expediting the Design Control Process, Design Change Process, Design Verification and Validation in compliance with the QMS and in support of product releases

• New Product Development
  • Designing Tooling/Fixture for new and existing products that meet operations requirements
  • Lead design for manufacturability through coordination with suppliers and internal team members
  • Providing guidance and expertise in DFMAS (Design for Manufacturing Assembly and Service) at conceptual stage of new product design
  • Developing products from concept and testing to production release

• Partnering with Other Departments
  • Creating and constructing structure for PDM system including but not limited to defining Meta data templates, workflow(s) and shareholder(s) assignments for sign-off for different workflow environments (Business, Engineering, and manufacturing)
  • Providing expert consultation in one or more areas of design, development, and implementation of technical products or systems
  • Supporting development of budgets and timelines for projects
  • Providing consultation and collaboration with various Engineering groups in one or more areas of design/re-design, development, process improvement, implementation of technical products or systems
  • Providing regulatory department technical support for assigned projects as needed
  • Supporting Marketing and Product Management with technical information to be used for training and marketing of assigned products
  • Reporting progress and status of assigned projects on a timely basis
  • Serving as the lead on existing supplier base to assist in design/process improvements
  • Working with the Electrical Engineering team to design PCBs to fit into enclosures and assemblies.

Requirements

• You need experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or other related discipline required. Master’s degree preferred
  • 15 years of relevant experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Expert understanding of electro-Mechanical and electro-Optical design principals including FEA, thermal dynamics, fluid dynamics and stress analysis
  • Expert in 3D-CAD (e.g. SolidWorks)
  • Working knowledge of mechanical testing equipment, electronic testing equipment, and automated test equipment
  • Expert in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and analysis of tolerance stackup for complex assemblies in accordance with ASME Y14.5
  • Experience with design optimization and simulation
  • Demonstrable experience in Design for Manufacturability Assembly and Serviceability, including manufacturing process optimization support, and Design for Cost
  • Expert understanding of fabrication techniques (e.g. machining, molding, laser cutting, etc.) and associated design tradeoffs
  • Expert in CAD (SolidWorks preferred) and experience with tools consistent with mechanical engineering experts such as hand tools, calipers, and Micrometers
