Viam is Hiring a Technical Writer Near New York, NY

Viam's products are built by engineers, for engineers. We are building a platform we would want to use ourselves. Creating technical documentation for our products is essential for the success of our users. As a Technical Writer, you will join a team focused on enabling software engineers to build and program robots.

You'll be:

  • Writing the documentation for Viam’s products
  • Contributing to and editing tutorials and developer blog content

We're looking for a entry-level or mid-level writer

For an entry-level writer, the expectations are:

  • Can produce well-structured and clear writing and has or can produce an example piece of technical writing (for example a blog post, a readme on a GitHub project, instructions for setting up a project, or documentation)
  • Some programming experience (Python, Go, or JavaScript preferred). Bonus points if you have a high-level understanding of Computer Science concepts.
  • Experience with or a wish to work on physical hardware
  • An interest in solving challenging problems with practical solutions

For a mid-level writer, the additional expectations are:

  • Has experience with technical writing and applies industry best practices to their work.
  • Can provide reviews for team members’ writing.
  • Can complete blog posts or regular documentation tasks largely without mentorship by collaborating with engineers and other stakeholders.

In 3 Months:

  • You have learned the tools the team uses (Git, Markdown, some HTML) and are familiar with our style guide.
  • You can complete small to medium-sized writing tasks on your own.
  • You understand the Viam platform enough to feel comfortable assembling robots based on tutorials.
  • You can write small programs for robots with our SDKs.

In 6 - 12 Months (subject to change and based on interest - use as indication only):

  • You can provide reviews on small to medium-sized writing tasks.
  • You are comfortable discussing the product with our engineers for documentation purposes.
  • You are contributing to content to enable developers without hardware experience to use Viam.
  • You are contributing to the developer blog or editing content from external writers.
  • You are working on robotics projects and documenting them alone or in collaboration with others.
