Veterans Health Administration is Hiring a Kinesiotherapist (Clinical Specialist)- Home Based Primary Care(HBPC) Near Kingman, AZ

The Kinesiotherapist (KT Clinical Specialist) provides in-home rehabilitation therapy assessments, home safety evaluations, treatment planning and administration, and management of rehabilitation, training and education in the home for patients of the Northern Arizona Veterans Health Care System Home Based Primary Care (HBPC) Program, which involves in-home services to Veterans with varying degrees of highly complex physical, psychological and/or physiological disorders.

Qualifications:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Citizenship. Citizen of the United States.
  • Education.
A Bachelor's degree or higher from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program, with a concentration/emphasis in kinesiotherapy.

OR

A Bachelor's degree or higher with a concentration/emphasis in kinesiotherapy or exercise science related field and registered as a kinesiotherapist in good standing with the COPSKT.

OR

A Master's degree or higher with a degree in exercise science, kinesiology, human performance or a related field, which has been approved by COPSKT and a certificate verifying completion of a Center of Excellence (COE) Kinesiotherapy clinical training program. The completion of the certificate ensures that COPSKT has approved the degree program as part of the application process for the COE internship.
  • Registration. All applicants must be registered in kinesiotherapy in good standing with the COPSKT.
  • English Language Proficiency. Kinesiotherapist candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English
  • Physical Requirements. Outlined below.


Grade Determinations:

Kinesiotheraptist (Clinical Specialist) GS-12
Experience.
In addition to meeting the basic requirements, one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level and one of the following:

  1. Evidence of a minimum of 2,000 hours of clinical practice directly in the specialty area within the last 5 years; or
  2. Certification in the specialty area from an accreditation body approved by COPSKT; or
  3. An additional advanced degree in a related field; or
  4. Completion of a fellowship program.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
  1. Knowledge in a range of specialized [interventions and treatment modalities used in a specialized treatment area of kinesiotherapy.
  2. Ability to serve as a consultant/mentor for health care providers regarding the delivery of care within a specialized area of kinesiotherapy.
  3. Skill to perform and interpret specialized evaluative procedures and tests in the treatment outcomes in the assigned specialty area.
  4. Skill in developing protocols and procedures for intervention programs based on current kinesiotherapy theory, recent research, and evidence-based practice.
Assignment. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. [The areas of recognized specialization include but are not limited to: cardiopulmonary rehabilitation; driver rehabilitation specialist; ergonomic specialist; geriatrics specialist; health coaching; assistive technology professional; functional capacity evaluation specialist; aquatic rehabilitation; amputee; and seating/mobility specialist. The clinical specialist is an advanced level practitioner with specialized knowledge and demonstrated clinical competence related to a particular diagnosis, patient population, or treatment area and has an increased depth and breadth of practice skills obtained through training and/or experience in specialty area. Participate in the professional development of colleagues as a preceptor and educator in the area of specialization. Demonstrate leadership within the area of expertise by refining programs and introducing new approaches for providing treatment in developing, initiating and refining treatment programs through current research and best practices of the profession. These individuals must demonstrate skills and techniques in a specialty area and/or specific population who have varying degrees of highly complex physical, psychological and/or physiological disorders.

Physical Requirements: Position consists of sedentary and active tasks. Sedentary tasks include but not limited to; sitting in a government vehicle, or a desk, utilizing a computer, phone, charting and other sedentary tasks. Active tasks include but not limited to; walking, standing, stepping, pulling, pushing, bending, squatting, lifting and reaching above or below your head and carrying moderate to heavy equipment greater than 50lbs.

Responsibilities:

Major duties include but are not limited to the following:
Clinical
  • Develops, implements and evaluates therapeutic rehabilitative programs within the framework of the regulating organizations as listed in the general description statement above independently.
  • Applies interventions and treatment modalities within the recognized areas of specialization of the KT Clinical Specialist.
  • Serves as a mentor/consultant for providers regarding geriatric specialty delivery of care, orthotic devices and durable medical equipment (DME).
  • Solves problems independently and is skilled in performing and interpreting evaluative procedures and tests for best treatment outcomes. Adapts and modifies treatment plans to meet the needs of the Veteran.
  • Develops appropriate treatment plans for interventions based on current theory, research and evidence-based practice for achieving maximum level of functioning within the home.
  • Carries out therapy treatment plan promptly to meet individual rehabilitative objectives through interventions such as but not limited to: therapeutic exercise, ambulation, ROM exercises, balance training, neuromuscular facilitation, transfer training, perceptual motor integration, as well as providing patient/family education regarding disability, adaptations, exercises, DME and recommending community referrals for home health therapies as indicated.
  • Re-evaluates promptly patients' performance with appropriate modifications to treatment plan as needed. Recognizes unanticipated rates of progress, significantly altered physical/mental status of patient or undesirable secondary effects of treatment. Documents these findings and outcomes while continuing to follow discharge plan. Plans Veterans' discharge from rehab when appropriate.
  • Evaluates Veterans' home environment through home visits and consultations with other healthcare professionals, patient and patients' significant others.
  • Works effectively with other healthcare providers, community resources, and veterans support systems. Communicates effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Documents veterans' goals, progress, discharge plans, interdisciplinary communications, and any other pertinent information necessary for successful treatment of the Veteran electronically.
  • Participates in HBPC interdisciplinary team conferences, consulting with other disciplines as indicated, and developing the care plan in collaboration with the treatment team, patient and caregiver.
  • Provides care for patients who may range in age from young adult to geriatric. Care must be age appropriate in approach, technique and goal development.
  • Acts as a resource for other members of the HBPC team on matters specific to Kinesiotherapy specialties.
  • Adheres to medical center infection control policies and procedures.
  • Participates in formal and informal research projects as necessary.
  • Performs higher level duties with significant scope and difficulty as a Clinical Specialist. This can include, but is not limited to geriatrics, ergonomics, fall prevention, weight management, assistive technology and seating/mobility.
  • The clinical specialist has specialized knowledge and demonstrates clinical competence relating to the HBPC patient population with an increased depth and breadth of practice skills obtained through training and/or experience in the specialty area.
  • Demonstrates leadership within the area of expertise by refining programs and introducing new approaches for providing treatment in developing, initiating and modifying treatment programs through best practices of the KT profession.
  • Provides Kinesiotherapy duties in other NAVAHCS HBPC teams during times of staffing shortages and staff leave.
Administrative
  • Coordinates the efficient operation and function of the HBPC Rehabilitation Therapy Program independently.
  • Completes the VA clinical reminders applicable to the therapists' assessment, if indicated.
  • Keeps inventory of necessary therapeutic supplies for treatment of the patients and places orders for further supplies through the HBPC or GEC admin staff. Places Prosthetic consults for DME, followed by delivery and training to the Veteran to assure the utmost safety and function, with required documentation in the medical record.
  • Manages own HBPC therapy schedule and utilizes team's shared appointment calendar.
  • Communicates personal location, equipment and material needs, and administrative needs to supervisor on a daily basis to assure seamless care is provided to the Veterans and their caregivers regularly and clearly.
  • Serves on ancillary committees as assigned.
  • Participates in HBPC quality assurance and performance improvement activities.
