Valley Power Systems is Hiring a Technician I Near West Sacramento, CA

Position Overview:
Responsible for repairing and overhauling fire vehicles and fire apparatuses. Must be certified in the use of the following diagnostic software programs: V-Mux, Detroit, CAT, Cummins, Wabco, Service link, Allison and Mercedes. Must have experience working on fire apparatus to include fire pumps, electrical systems, multi-plex electrical systems, brakes, suspension and drive trains including experience troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing and rebuilding CAT, Detroit, and Cummins engines. Experience performing annual fire pump tests, welding experience and extensive small tool and small equipment repair experience is a must. California State Vehicle Inspection License, Certified Diesel Mechanic and a California CDL Class "B"; Hazmat Certification preferred but not required. Work involves ability to follow directions and work with limited supervision.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):

  • Inspect and diagnose mechanical defects in mechanical equipment, including diesel engines, gasoline engines, transmissions, fire pumps, hydraulic ladder equipment and other equipment typical to vehicles and fire apparatuses
  • Performs repair and maintenance work on vehicles and heavy equipment including brake work, chassis work, transmissions, electrical work, fuel systems, cooling systems emission control systems, and welding
  • Performs preventative maintenance on Fire vehicles including inspections, changing oil, greasing, and tune-ups
  • Operates units after repairs are complete to ensure good working order and that problems were corrected
  • Maintains shop repair records, vehicle files, tool inventory lists, and material safety data forms.
  • Consults with vehicle or equipment operators to assist in diagnosing problems and facilitating the repair procedure
  • Assists in safety inspection program for all vehicles. Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of the job
  • Perform other job duties as assigned

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the repair and diagnosis
  • Product knowledge and experience understanding technical issues and ability to apply previous technical experience to solve technical problems
  • Practiced documentation skills
  • Must be able to read, write and understand service instructions
  • Experience using repair manuals, wiring (electrical) diagrams and schematics necessary to troubleshoot or repair vehicle or component failure
  • Strong technical/mechanical skills and experience required; product knowledge helpful
  • Must be organized
  • Must be able to read, write and understand service instructions
  • Computer skills are important

Education & Experience:

  • 3 to 5 years fire vehicle repair experience
  • EVT, CA state, or fire repair factory certificates preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics; Considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, and welding; price trends and grades or quality of materials and equipment; Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities; Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to communicate with customers and must be able to exchange accurate information. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items up to 70 pounds. Must be able to detect parts and machinery from a distance and up close.

Tool Requirements:

  • Have a complete set of hand tools.

Working Environment: **
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.
