The 3M Electrical Markets Division (EMD) commercializes products that enable changes in the way the world generates, moves, and uses electricity. Our products help to make electrical system more reliable, efficient, and safe. The products range from erosion-resistant tapes applied to the leading edge of wind turbine blades; to transparent and moisture impermeable films for flexible solar modules; to cable splices for the electrical grid; to materials that help make the battery packs of electric vehicles safer. We are seeking a creative, diligent, and rigorous product engineer to help commercialize new products and modify existing products to meet customers’ needs. The position will support various product platforms, and as such, requires broad technical knowledge as well as the ability to work with people from various functions and geographies. The ideal candidate is a passionate person who strives to bring relevant products to market, enjoys working with various technologies for various applications, and takes pride in leading and completing projects with rigor. Here, you will make an impact by: Leading critical commercialization efforts for new and modified products Transitioning product concepts from the laboratory to large-scale manufacturing Your Skills and Expertise To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution Three (3) years of product development work in a private, public, government, or military environment Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include: Bachelor’s degree or higher in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, polymer science, or a related field Experience with formulation, scale-up, production, and characterization of various materials and products, preferably including: EPDM and silicone rubbers; polyurethane and epoxy resins; spray adhesives; tapes. 5 years’ experience in developing and testing rubber compounds, preferably for medium and high voltage electrical applications Experience with electrical characterization of rubber compounds — resistance, capacitance, breakdown strength Experience with developing material standards and specifications Experience with the following processes: RM substitutions (and the 3M change management process), NPI process, SKU creation, BOM creation, PFMEA, DFMEA, HOQ, test method development, MSA, capability studies, data analysis (e.g., in Minitab or Excel), root cause analysis, Six Sigma. Experience with 3M manufacturing operations Experience with guiding the efforts of external partners (e.g., compounders) Ability to work with minimal supervision (self-motivated) and in teams Ability to conform to shifting demands, timelines, and priorities Willingness to travel (within the US mainly) Travel: May include up to 20% domestic/international Relocation Assistance: May be authorized Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status).
