Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. *Serves as International Student Advisor to advise international students on immigration policies and regulations directly affecting or affected by curricular requirements, academic options, policies and procedures. 
  2. *Functions as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO, certified by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the US Department of State (DOS) respectively, to ensure the university's compliance with federal regulations governing the enrollment of international students and exchange visitors.
  3. *Utilizes the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) with specialized knowledge and expertise for the interpretation and application of complex federal regulations and academic policies and procedures. 
  4. *Assists students in formulating and assessing academic and career goals as allowed within the guidelines of their visa status.
  5. *Plans, implements and participates in a wide range of international students cultural and social adjustment programs, including orientation and mentoring programs. 
  6. *Prepares, develops, and presents immigration Information sessions for small groups and large audiences.
  7. *Assists in planning, implementing, managing, and assessing international students advising support programs and services.
  8. *Assists in the development and evaluation of international student advising policies and procedures.
  9. *Develops, reviews and maintains materials that communicate office services, programs, resources and legal information for ISS' website. 
  10. *Writes a variety of correspondence, brochures, reports, program descriptions and proposals.
  11. *Serves as liaison to an assigned portfolio of colleges, schools, and departments, as well as other administrative units on campus. 
  12. *Liaises with third-party sponsored students and sponsoring organizations.
  13. *Liaises with the state and federal agencies such as US Department of Homeland Security, US Department of State (DOS), Social Security Administrations (SSA), and the Department of Motor Vehicles. 
  14. Trains and supervises staff, including student assistants and interns.
  15. Serves on university committees and a resource to campus international education stakeholders.
  16. Advocate on behalf of international students at the university, state and national levels.
  17. Other duties as assigned.

 Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in business administration, social sciences, social work, human development, education, or related field and 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities of international students advising in an institute of higher education, cultural adjustment programming, of which 1 year shall include professional International student advising experience with responsibility for performing SEVIS administration functions for F1 and/or J1 student visas as a Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO); and designing, implementing and evaluating cross-cultural adjustment activities; or equivalent education/training or experience
  2. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the learning services for immigration and academic advising as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with immigration and academic advising in an institute of higher education.
  4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  8. For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
  9. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  1. Must have strong computer skills, including using the internet, e-mail, and word processing.
  2. Strong interpersonal communication skills and attention to details.
  3. Demonstrated ability to write brochures, handbooks, reports, or handouts. 
  4. Demonstrated ability to establish priorities and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team.
  6. Demonstrated proficiency using the US DHS' Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). 
  7. Eligibility for certification by the US DHS as a Designated School Officials (DSO) and certification by the US DOS as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)- must be US citizen or lawful US permanent resident.

Desirable Qualifications: 

  1. Possession of a Master's degree in business administration, social sciences, social work, human development, education, or related field. 
  2. Working knowledge of University of Hawaii internationalization strategies and programs. 
  3. Experience living, studying, or working abroad. 
  4. Competency in a second language (other than English).
