Position Summary Information
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The role of the Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) department is primarily environment, health and safety functions at the University. In support of the University’s core mission, EHS will provide comprehensive environmental, health and safety services to the University community. This includes education through training and consultation, maintaining a safe environment through recognizing and controlling health and safety hazards, ensuring a process of regulatory compliance and minimizing future potential liabilities. By developing EHS programs and performing various periodic inspections we can provide a safe work place, ensure a process of compliance and minimize future potential liabilities. EHS is organized into eight (8) sections: Biological Safety, Environmental Affairs, Fire Safety & Emergency Response, Occupational & Environmental Hygiene, Chemical Safety, Radiation Safety, Workplace Safety and Business & Support.
Position Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Facilities Services Safety Officer who implements and monitors the safety program for the Facilities Service Division. The position will implement, monitor, and carry out a safety program for the Facilities Services Division, including hazards identification and management, training, safety inspections and education in order to ensure a safe work environment and safe work practices for Facilities Services staff and maintain compliance with OSHA, EPA, NFPA, state (NCDOL) and university requirements. The individual in this position must have broad-based knowledge in workplace safety. The scope of work is broad, including such areas as hand and power tools, confined space safety, erecting scaffolding and operating specialized heavy equipment, and performing plumbing and HVAC work in research laboratories and clinical environments. Employees within Facilities Services Division work in the industrial, maintenance, construction, housekeeping, grounds, and office environments. The individual in this position implements and monitors the educational program and trains/consults with Facilities Services staff on corrective actions, regulations, and requirements of regulatory agencies of the departments specified above. The primary goal of the position is to ensure a healthy and safe environment for the 1000 staff members in the division of Facilities Services.
This position reports to the Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Workplace Safety Program Manager but its physical location is within the Facilities Services Division.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Four year degree with a preference for a related major in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or closely related science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require specific certifications or licenses. Specific jobs will require additional minimum training and/or licensing upon selection.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology, or closely related science and/or 4-5 years’ experience in the Environment, Health & Safety profession or a combination of training/education and experience.
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate using written, oral, and multimedia modalities with a range of people (students, staff, faculty, department heads, managers, visitors, etc.) is essential.
Demonstrated strong organization and observation skills, high degree of accuracy, attention to detail, ability to work independently, adaptability (ability to make sudden changes as events occur), and knowledge of guides, regulations, policies, and regulations relevant to position.
Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
A high degree of accuracy and attention to detail due to the criticality of inspections and the consequences should unsafe working conditions exist, ability to work independently
Ability to use computers and various software applications such as MS Word, Excel, and the institutionally developed database (HASMIS), decontamination solutions, personal protective equipment, SCBA, respirators, etc.

Position must be completely aware of and responsible for the safety of others on the University campus. The positions’ purpose is to establish and maintain health and safety at this academic institution. The employee is expected to set an exemplary standard for everyone on safety philosophy, correct use of safety principles and adherence to all rules, regulations, and standards of good practice.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements
An annual physical exam is required as participation in the HAZMAT team.
Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license and an acceptable driving record
Position requires:
  • Frequents walking, bending, standing and/or climbing ladders.
  • Ability to enter laboratory animal research areas with proper PPE.
  • Ability to wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
  • Exposure to animal, biological, radiation, physical and/or chemical hazards daily in the support areas.
  • Work may require entering tight spaces.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Example: gloves, eye protection, SCBA, respirators, shoe covers, coveralls, etc.) and training on proper use is required.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principal characteristics of hazardous agents and the accurate measurements and observation of the hazards is essential.
  • Work environments can be affected by extreme weather conditions.
  • Position is Emergency Event, Adverse Weather and Communicable Disease Mandatory. The employee may be required to respond during severe weather episodes and/or any other University emergency.
