University Maryland is Hiring a Data Scientist Near College Park, MD

The CATT Laboratory is the leading transportation information analysis and visualization laboratory in the country. Our products and services are used by thousands of public safety agencies, state and local departments of transportation, public officials, and consultants every day. We provide an integrated product suite of situational awareness tools for emergency managers, as well as leading edge data analytics products for transportation planners and consultants. These products and services are rapidly changing the way governments do business and make important decisions. We receive hundreds of gigabytes of transportation data every day ranging from traffic accident information to real-time traffic speed and flow information.

The CATT Lab is searching for a talented data scientist that can provide analytics support to help solve transportation, safety, and security problems. You will be responsible for managing a small technical team and working with the CATT Lab's transportation datasets and tools to help support reporting, analysis, modeling, and visualization needs. You should be experienced with extracting and transforming data to deliver analytical solutions, methodologies, models, and dashboards. This position requires experience with developing and implementing predictive models. Good communication skills, organization, time management, and a "will to learn" are essential. Primary job responsibilities include:

  • Develop analytical and statistical techniques such as hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, descriptive statistics, correlation, regression, etc.
  • Perform exploratory research projects and ad-hoc analysis/reports, graphs, charts, and dashboards.
  • Develop technical methodologies and approaches to big data projects.
  • Implement machine learning models to enhance CATT Lab's current suite of tools.
  • Perform data extraction, cleansing and transformation of large datasets for statistical analysis (querying, handling of missing values, creating new variables etc.)
  • Identify new datasets for integration with existing tools.
  • Perform feature engineering/extraction.
  • Implement big data calculations using techniques such as parallel processing.
  • Develop data visualizations including ad-hoc reports, graphs, charts and/or dashboards and leverage business intelligence techniques such as trend and drill-down capabilities.
  • Develop and implement Tableau Online/Server dashboards.
  • Effectively estimate effort for each work task.
  • Assist with prioritizing tasks and assigning tasks across team.
  • Review all technical work and deliverables.
  • Mentor and coach junior staff.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with software developers, technical project managers, and other technical staff.
  • Lead documentation of technical results and recommendations.
  • Assist with developing technical methodologies for proposals and research papers.
