DESCRIPTION

The UC San Diego Health Moores Cancer Center (MCC) is one of just 53 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States and the only one in San Diego County. As a consortium cancer center, it is a collaborative partnership encompassing 14 UC San Diego departments (12 clinical, 2 basic sciences), 3 professional schools (School of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Public Health), UC San Diego Health oncology hospitals and clinics; the basic and public health research and outreach of San Diego State University (SDSU), and the basic and translational research of the La Jolla Institute of Immunology (LJI). The Associate Director of Research Affairs (ADRA) is a key member of the senior administrative leadership team and strategic partner to the Cancer Center Director and Executive Director for Administration. The ADRA serves as the research deputy to the Executive Director for Administration, representing the MCC when requested.

The ADRA develops, drives and oversees the research portfolio of Moores Cancer Center and programmatic development to further support the translation of discoveries. The ADRA leads scientific teams in developing research programs and securing funding to support the effort to meet strategic and programmatic goals. The ADRA leads the MCC's research proposal development initiatives inclusive of leading the Cancer Center Support Grant submission, organizing complex multi-researcher and research domain grants, and identifying and guiding MCC faculty through complex, paradigm changing scientific proposals. The ADRA also serves as a role model and mentor for other employees, providing critical insight on matters of research administration and expert level knowledge of the requirements and nuances of the Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) which provides MCC with its NCI designation.

The ADRA will have oversight for developing budgets and rates, and monitoring usage and service of the MCC shared resources of which there are seven currently. The incumbent will establish an appropriate/relevant SR governance structure for all SRs to ensure compliance with institutional and federal guidelines and requirements.

Incumbent is crucial in developing and overseeing Moores Cancer Center's research portfolio and translational research initiatives, enhancing and growing academic research. Incumbent requires constant originality in problem resolution, strategic thinking and analysis. The incumbent will establish operational objectives and work plans and delegate assignments to subordinates. Responsible for managing, preparing, administering, and directing departmental resources. Incumbent will oversee and will be responsible for ensuring there is sufficient administrative coordination and planning that defines Center, School, and Health System boundaries to maximize synergies for research productivity of the Center. Accountability for errors and problem resolution is inherent in this position.

Incumbent plays a critical role in monitoring division and department compliance with all applicable University policies. Incumbent is involved in developing, modifying and executing organizational policies that impact immediate operation(s) and may also have organization-wide effects by representing the department in campus-wide, UC-wide, and national leadership meetings and councils. The ADRA leads efforts to develop policies and procedures to enhance the infrastructure of the Center, and provides creative problem solving and process improvement strategies.

Incumbent works closely with all MCC members, inclusive of clinical, basic, translational and population science researchers at UC San Diego and at consortium partners at San Diego State University and La Jolla Institute of Immunology to achieve the research strategic goals of the Center. The ADRA will establish and enhance internal (UCSD enterprise) and external relationships inclusive of local, regional and national external scientific and funding partners. Balances and synthesize priorities to provide business guidance and manage the execution of all necessary agreements, in a challenging environment with changing priorities.

Takes leadership role in independently managing and developing a large, complex academic research program of high visibility. Develops vision and establishes agenda to achieve research objectives. Oversees all elements of program administration. Is considered a subject matter expert in scientific research collaboration and large proposal management within MCC and is recognized as an expert externally in the field.

Serves as key strategist with the Executive in initiating and developing new strategic direction, long- and short-range plans and innovative initiatives. Has high level authority to make official commitments and to broadly represent the Executive's interests across the organization. Responds to issues with little or no precedence. May manage and administer independent program(s), typically with organization-wide impact. May manage professional staff handling diverse administrative functions such as human resources and budgetary planning. Uses advanced concepts and organizational objectives to resolve highly complex issues. Regularly works on highly complex issues or problems which require analysis of unique issues/problems without precedent and/or structure. Exercises a high level of judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Nine (9) years of directly relevant experience in clinical-translational research, ideally within a NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus five (5) years of directly relevant experience.

  • Advanced skills in short- and long-range planning, program and project management, facilitation and collaboration.

  • Sound strategic thinking and consulting skills in guiding the organization toward workable strategies and solutions.

  • Advanced ability to coach, facilitate and influence people at all levels.

  • Advanced ability to build and maintain relationships with a broad range of staff and members of the community.

  • Knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.

  • Financial analysis and reporting techniques.

  • Advanced knowledge of the NIH Cancer Center Support Grant requirements and components.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ten (10 ) or more years of relevant experience in clinical-translational research and strategic planning, ideally within a NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center
  • Advanced degree.
  • Terminal degree in a related field (PhD, JD, MD, etc.).
  • Doctoral degree in the biomedical or health sciences.
  • Administration or clinical degree, or equivalent experience and training.
  • Experience writing and coordinating the submission of NCI Cancer Center Support Grants.
  • Experience coordinating successful multi-component NIH grants.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $92,600 - $232,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $44.35 - $111.21

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
