United Way Of The Eastern Upper Peninsula is Hiring a Program Director Near Sault Ste. Marie, MI

United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula is looking for a Program Director to supervise our grant funded Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. The Program Director will be responsible for the delivery and overall success of this program, including it's Reading Buddies, Youth Mentoring and Elder Empowerment work plans. They will regularly supervise RSVP staff as part of a management team, assist in managing elder program volunteers, and inform United Way of the EUP management on progress and performance of this Federally funded program. A successful Program Director will have a broad knowledge of program management principles and will understand the financial aspects of running a program, including use of a Fiscal Year budget for decision making. They will have a strategic and collaborative mindset as well as be able to lead and develop subordinates with a team mentality. The goal is to ensure this program is delivered successfully within the Eastern Upper Peninsula and adds the highest possible value to United Way of the EUP's community impact work.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the RSVP including the program budget, program evaluations and Federal compliance requirements. Compiles and prepares data for annual program grant renewal with the help of United Way of the EUP management.
  • Maintains appropriate fiscal and program records according to federal guidelines, prepares and submits accurate reports in a timely fashion.
  • Establishes and retains a good working relationship with volunteer stations and MOU agreements. Ensures MOU agreements are updated and filed according to Federal program guidelines.
  • Together with Program Coordinator(s), creates, develops and conducts overall senior volunteer recruitment strategies that are aligned with United Way of the EUP's Community Impact focus areas.
  • Ensures target goals of the RSVP are being met, measures and reports success as requested.
  • Tracks and reports volunteers in database software system.
  • Processes criminal background checks as part of the volunteer recruitment process.
  • Creates and maintains collaborative partnerships necessary to identify/create/promote a continuum of senior volunteer engagement in Community Impact focus areas. Key external partners include targeted local non-profit agencies. Key internal partners include the Community Engagement and Community Impact staff.
  • Represents RSVP & United Way through community networking and participating in activities that connect senior recruitment strategies to established Community Impact focus areas.
  • Manages and directs the RSVP Program Coordinator position(s) to ensure the best possible use of time and talent.
  • Together with the Coordinator(s), designs and implements both individual and group recognition strategies for RSVP volunteers. This includes hosting group events, creating a periodic newsletter, and posting volunteer stories on social media and website blogs.
  • Stays abreast of issues and trends in senior volunteering by networking with local, state and national sector knowledge bases.
  • Fosters organizational teamwork by participating in special projects and organizational activities and encouraging participation of directly supervised staff.
  • Aligns behavior and work with United Way of the EUP's Code of Ethics.
  • Attends state and local training opportunities for AmeriCorps Seniors, as needed.
  • Attends regional conference when possible (this may require travel outside the state of Michigan once per calendar year).

Additional Responsibilities:

This position also initiates, or is directed by the CEO to perform, additional duties or tasks to support United Way’s mission and help attain goals set forth for both United Way EUP and its RSVP.

  • Self-motivated: Ability to reach a goal or perform a task with little or no supervision in a timely manner

Education: High School Diploma or GED required.Bachelor’s degree in human services or related field, recommended.

Experience: Three to five years’ experience in the field of management (especially Volunteer Management) as a supervisor or program director, including recruitment of volunteers or paid staff, preferred.

Computer Skills: Strong proficiency with computers required. Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, use of online database programs, and social media (especially Facebook and Instagram) recommended.

Facilitation Skills: Experience with community planning, community organization and working in a team planning process to bring a group to consensus is recommended.

  • Ability to empathize with and manage senior citizens.
  • Well-organized and detail oriented and able to work well with people across various socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Must be able to take initiative, demonstrate leadership, work inter-dependently and produce consistently high-quality work.
  • Valid driver’s license, dependable transportation and proof of adequate automobile insurance
  • Basic knowledge of community agencies and non-profit groups is helpful
  • Position is subject to a three-part criminal history check (including FBI fingerprinting, State of Michigan criminal history repository check, and a National Sex Offender Public Registry check. Applicant must pass all prior to employment.

Required Travel

Local: Candidate will be required to regularly travel across the EU.P. inside our coverage area which includes Mackinac, Luce, and Chippewa counties.

Out-of-Town: Overnight travel (including out-of-state which may require air travel) occurs, potentially, two to three times per year with stays of up to four nights each. Maintaining a driver's license, personal vehicle, and adequate insurance is required.
