Union Mutual is currently recruiting for the right candidate to join our Company as a Commercial Lines Field Underwriter. This is a remote or hybrid position and because the position is responsible for a southern New England book of business, the ideal candidate will be located in that area. Travel to the Company’s home office in Montpelier, Vermont will be required for scheduled meetings.

Summary:

The Commercial Lines Underwriter is accountable for developing, managing, and facilitating growth of a profitable portfolio of business in an assigned territory. This includes making recommendations for commercial risk improvement, as necessary; working with the Marketing team to bring Union Mutual products to a network of independent agents; and serving as an internal resource for other departments within the Company as well as external agency partners. Some travel is expected.

Essential Functions:

  • Accepts, declines, and modifies commercial lines business within a specified Underwriting territory in accordance with Company Underwriting Guidelines
  • Validates information provided through inspection and data reports and monitors agency performance and quality of submissions
  • Monitors book performance and quality through proprietary analytics and remains accountable for profit-focused risk selection and pricing within the specified territory
  • Develops positive working relationships with all stakeholders and provides high level of service to agency partners while marketing company products and services
  • Participates in various underwriting training activities for internal staff and agency partners
  • Participates in new commercial lines business development strategies and monitors emerging industry trends

Education & Experience:

  • Minimum of five years of commercial multi-line underwriting experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree is preferred
  • Insurance designations such as CPCU, CIC or other are preferred
  • Valid driver’s license required with an acceptable motor vehicle report per Company standards

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Broad knowledge of property and casualty insurance industry and good knowledge of independent agency operations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and excellent organizational skills
  • Detail oriented with strong problem-solving abilities and human relations skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
