Overview

The Payroll Specialist is responsible for the administration of payroll, commissions, and taxes for a growing multi-state independent mortgage banking company with over 1,500 employees. The Payroll Specialist will maintain confidentiality, accuracy, full compliance, and strong internal controls. The Payroll Specialist will also drive processes to improve efficiency and identify process improvements and best practices to eliminate errors.

Responsibilities

• Process payroll for both biweekly (non-exempt) and semi-monthly (exempt and sales) pay frequencies.
• Review employee timecards for accuracy and resolve timecard exceptions prior to the payroll submission.
• Calculate and accrue incentive bonuses for both pay frequencies.
• Process employee, salary, promotion, and pay frequency changes.
• Prorate pay for new hires, terminations, and for pay changes effective midpay period.
• Research and register new local and state tax jurisdictions, complete setup in payroll.
• Review new hire local tax jurisdiction and set up as necessary.
• Track exemption status changes in payroll and adjust pay accordingly.
• Generate reports needed by management on a routine basis.
• Assist employees and supervisors with questions related to payroll.
• Maintain accuracy of all system-generated direct deposits and checks, including computation and calculation of any special checks needed for bonus pay, PTO, and termination pay.
• Maintain payroll-related legal and regulatory compliance.
• Maintain effective internal controls and proactively identify efficiency improvements and gaps.
• Maintain mapping of the General Ledger interface within HRIS, which includes mapping new locations, new deduction codes, and special mapping on a case-by-case basis as determined by accounting.

Education & Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field, preferred.
• Prior payroll experience, preferred.
• Experience with Paycom, preferred.
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Skilled knowledge of how to use spreadsheets (i.e., Microsoft Excel) and demonstrates accurate data entry skills.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Exhibits the highest level of confidentiality.
