Ultima Genomics is Hiring an Environmental Health & Safety Specialist Near Fremont, CA

We are looking for a highly motivated Environmental Health & Safety Specialist Specialist to join our team!

The Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Specialist position is primarily responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining programs focused on a healthy, safe working environment and assisting with the management of product and process-related chemical elements.

This role will also facilitate a Safety Committee and participate in customer feedback sessions as they relate to the installation, maintenance, and safe operations on our product (i.e., chemicals and wastewater).

How You’ll Contribute

  • Promote a safe working environment for employees and monitor for safe working practices.
  • Responsible for the documentation (e.g., hazardous waste manifest and profiles, MSDS, SDS), handling procedures, storage/ recycling, and disposal of medical, biohazardous, and hazardous wastes.
  • Ensure sampling, manifesting, packaging, labeling, and loading of all medical, biohazardous, and hazardous waste is accurate and adheres to state and federal environmental, health, and safety regulations.
  • Perform hazard identification, risk assessment, safety, and environmental aspect analysis.
  • Assist in the development of all company operations concerning the fire, emergency, safety, and environmental programs.
  • Perform planned and unplanned EHS inspections.
  • Coordinate wastewater and rain sampling per applicable federal, state, and local issued permits and requirements.
  • Schedule medical, biohazardous, and hazardous waste pick-ups and ensure waste is shipped out in a timely fashion.
  • Assist in incident (and near-miss) investigations, identify root causes, and ensure conformance.
  • Oversee the transfer of hazardous chemicals to ensure safety and environmental compliance.
  • Responsible for maintaining the inventory and storage of hazardous materials in accordance with appropriate regulations, policies, practices, and procedures including applicable reports. Maintain accurate data for Chemical Inventory in the buildings and the maintenance of Material Safety Data Sheet online library.
  • Provide technical guidance and support coordination as needed.
  • Oversee the storage of hazardous waste and materials in accordance with appropriate regulations, policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Provide training on EH&S programs (e.g., Powered Industrial Trucks (Forklifts), Hazardous Waste Disposal, and product wastewater monitoring, etc.).
  • Responsible for decontaminating equipment and mold infected material when required.
  • Assist in gathering and preparing information on environmental relevance such as charts, graphs, and presentations.
  • Support the retrieval of hazardous waste from various areas onsite.
  • Provide hands-on support (as needed / requested) to help employees to meet safety requirements/obligations.
  • Ensure company compliance and appropriate reporting of hazardous materials inventory to outside agencies.
  • Operates forklift to move materials for storage and loading and unloading.
  • Oversee and coordinate company or consultant crew’s activities during an incident response and clean-up.
  • Any other EHS related task that the Manager understand the employee is trained and capable to perform.

Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Biosciences degree and / or EHS Certification.
  • 5 years of relevant progressive environmental and safety experience.
  • First Aid/CPR Certified.
  • Detailed knowledge of Safety and Environmental regulations as well as other applicable industry environmental, health and safety standards.
  • Demonstrated professional communications skills with an ability to effectively deal with persons at all levels, including scientists, support staff, senior managers, and regulatory officials.
  • Previous work experience with hazardous materials and waste.
  • Working knowledge of environment, safety and health principles and practices.
  • Ability to work in an organized and team-oriented fashion.
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER and DOT Certified preferred.
  • Forklift Certified preferred.
  • On-going coursework in Hazardous Waste Management Certification programs preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities with a high degree of self-motivation.
