The Activity Therapist supervises and coordinates the activities of patients in the Adjunctive Therapy program to facilitate rehabilitation of physically, mentally or emotionally disabled patients. The Activity Therapist follows policies, procedures, standards and objectives for the treatment of patients; complies with performance improvement program. May organize and conduct music, art, recreation, or other therapy programs, depending on specialty. Directs patient participation in selected tasks to restore, reinforce and enhance performance. Facilitates the learning of skills and functions essential for adaptation and productivity, diminish or correct pathology, to promote and maintain health. Other duties include but not limited to:

  • Participates in the implementation of departmental patient care policies, procedures and protocols as required.
  • Participates in planning skills in the routine scheduling of patients for adjunctive therapy treatments in accordance with available personnel and equipment.
  • Promptly records all referrals for adjunctive therapy. Documents the date for the referral service as requested.
  • Always obtains complete information about the patient’s medical history, leisure interests and previous level of physical activity through patient interviews and discussions with other informed sources. Recommends a plan of care.
  • Teaches patients the skills and techniques required for participation in activities and evaluates patient’s progress, attitudes and behavior as related to their rehabilitative potential.
  • Identify patient needs, develop and coordinate the implementations of therapeutic programs in accordance with administrative guidelines and medical directives.
  • Orients and educates the client and other appropriate parties to the purposes and procedures of the adjunctive therapy evaluation.
  • Initiates patient charges. Maintains department records.
  • Records all patient services provided, complies with billing/charge procedures.
  • Completes all Adjunctive Therapy log documentation in a timely manner as assigned.
  • Consistently conducts a thorough initial assessment of patient needs and develops a care plan within 72 hours of patient’s admission, as assigned.
  • Always communicates with other members of the rehabilitation team to select the most appropriate treatment consistent with the needs and capabilities of each patient.
  • Maintains compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Participates in treatment planning and advises on planned programs for therapy.
  • Consistently conducts population specific treatment groups starting and ending on time.

Qualifications

Education: Degree in Recreation, Music, Art, or appropriate program required.

Credentials:

  • Art Therapy National Art Therapy Credentials Board or State of California Registration with the California Board of Behavioral Science;

Experience:

  • Minimum one (1) year experience in psychiatric setting preferred;
  • Working knowledge of the psychiatric process and its relationship to arts, crafts, sports, games, small/large group activities preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Knowledgeable in the following methods: ADL programs, craft-assisted therapies, prevocational skills, sensory motor techniques, developmental activities, large and small group intervention skills, and cognitive/social skill development.
  • Knowledgeable in the following methods: Passive and active activities, large and small group activities, knowledge of leisure activities, counseling techniques, general knowledge of sports and/or music.
  • Must have psychological sensitivity and instructional skills.
  • Must be able to perform assignments with minimal supervision;
  • Must be able to work successfully under highly stressful conditions;
  • Must be able to make sound, independent judgments based on scientific and/or ethical principles;
  • Must be able to comprehend and perform oral and written instructions and procedures;
  • Must be able to collaborate with other multidisciplinary team members in an appropriate fashion;
  • Must be capable of adapting to varying workloads and work assignments on a constant basis;
  • Must have effective comprehensive reading skills, strong communication skills, written and verbal.
