UHS of Delaware, Inc. is Hiring a TEACHER ASSISTANT (Christiansburg) Near CHRISTIANSBURG, VA

Responsibilities

Position Summary:

To assist in the direct care and management of children, adolescent and young adult students (age 5 to 22 years) as prescribed by the physician and treatment team; to provide supervision, safety and crisis management for the student population; to complete documentation of student behavior and participation in programming; to adhere to the scheduled activities; role model positive, mature behavior; utilize positive behavioral strategies to minimize student crisis and maximize success. This position is responsible for assisting the classroom teacher in the implementation of the academic program for each student under their care. The employee will also be involved in generating and implementing programs to remediate behavioral, social, and academic issues for students eligible for special educational service.

Physical Demands: Must be able to:

  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand, walk, kneel and reach while working with students for approximately 80-90% of the day.
  • Use the full range of body motion including handling and physically restraining students when necessary.
  • Perform First Aid and CPR.
  • Key at a computer, review reports containing data with small print, read and write proficiently in English, and speak clearly. Hearing and vision must be sufficient to perform the essential job functions.
  • Qualifications

    Key Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):

  • Planning:
  • Assist in designing programs for students with special needs that are consistent with the total educational philosophy and the student(s) present goals and objectives.
  • Continuing professional growth through educational professional growth, visiting related facilities, reading professional growth literature, and exchanging ideas among the current staff.
  • Working in coordination with other teachers and administration in planning and developing individualized programs.
  • Working as a team member in the development and implementation of alternative educational and behavioral programs.
  • Attend and participate in all unit meetings and trainings.
  • Providing Services to Students:
  • Participating as a team member in the identification of social/behavioral issues.
  • Designing, implementing, and following up on behavioral management programs for student(s) to remediate behavioral and social issues.
  • Assists in providing safe delivery of care to meet the goals and objectives of each student’s plan of care.
  • Participating as a team member in the evaluation of student progress.
  • Developing and maintaining psychosocial and behavioral data on these student(s).
  • Assisting other professionals with student crisis intervention.
  • Follow the instructional and treatment plans for each student under their supervision
  • Assists in providing safe delivery of care to meet the goals and objectives of each student’s plan of care.
  • Communicates with student’s family regarding student’s progress and current program.
  • Collaborates with other disciplines to ensure follow through on all aspects of students’ treatment program.
  • Assists student to successfully work program and assists with discharge planning.
  • Ensures students need for clothing, hygiene items and other personal needs are met.
  • Recognizes and reports to appropriate person physical/medical/behavioral status of the student in a timely manner
  • Implements psycho educational and psychosocial groups as assigned and documents participation.
  • Providing Services to Teacher(s):
  • Planning and conferring with classroom teacher(s) of these students as requested, concerning any behavioral, social, or educational issues affecting the student(s).
  • Assisting the teacher(s) of these students with the development of crisis prevention plans.
  • Attending professional training for the programs in the areas of behavioral management skills, affective education, along with other specific training directly related to providing effective services to these student(s).
  • Responds to crisis situations and manages student’s behavior in accordance with the individual behavior plan, as well as the facilities policies and procedures.
  • Assists with the unit milieu to guide the development of acceptable habits and attitudes by consistently and fairly implementing the behavioral program, emphasizing good choices, and positive interactions.
  • Documentation
  • Assisting as a team member in the development and implementation of reporting present conditions to the appropriate facility personnel.
  • Assisting as a team member in completion of reports to be provided to local and state educational agencies.
  • Participating as a team member in referring those student(s) who require further evaluation or follow-up services to the appropriate personnel, professionals, or agencies.
  • Completes documentation regarding student supervision and participation in the program in a timely manner.
  • Completes progress notes and data collection in a timely manner.
  • Completes shift communication log at appropriate times with professional entries
  • Attends and contributes to change of shift report
  • Other Responsibilities:
  • Assisting as a team member with the development and maintenance of program evaluation procedures that includes a daily student log.
  • Fulfills responsibilities to the facility in adherence to philosophy and general policy
  • Serve as a role model for the students of The Hughes Center
  • Ensures all living and working areas are clean and sanitary for the students and the next shift that comes in to work. Ensures all living areas and work areas meet the Commonwealth of Virginia DBHDS/DOE/OHR Regulations at all times.
  • Fulfills attendance requirements
  • Works required holidays, and shift hold over’s.
  • Maintains all necessary certifications (CPR/first aid, etc.), as well as job specific competencies
  • Adheres to dress code
  • Adheres to facility safety practices
  • Demonstrates ability and flexibility to work different shifts as well as different units & classrooms.
  • Consistently uses badge to punch in and out for work
  • Follows programming schedule for both the unit/classroom, as well as individual schedules.
  • Provides transportation to students as needed
  • Actively participates and facilitates leisure activities
  • Actively participates and helps to facilitate community meetings
  • Attend all staff meetings as required.
  • Performing other duties assigned by their supervisor and/or Educational Director, or designee, that relate to any programs at Hughes Center.
  • Must be Vaccinated / Covid - 19 
  • Qualifications: Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

    Good verbal and written skills, ability to rotate shifts and units as necessary, and ability to maintain student’s confidentiality. Knowledge of principles of psychology and child growth and development are useful. Limit-setting, responding to children and adolescents in a caring, mature manner, while maintaining professional boundaries necessary. Must consistently exhibit mental and emotional ability to understand and perform the essential functions of the job.

    Education: High school diploma/GED required.

    Experience: Six months related experience with adolescents and children or related college coursework in a related field. Previous experience working with people with intellectual disabilities or developmental delays preferred.

    Licensure: Current Virginia driver’s licensure with an acceptable driving record, CPR certification, First Aid Certificate, and Crisis Management Certification.
