Mental Health Specialist (MHS) Opportunity

Day Shift (7AM to 3:30PM)

North Star Behavioral Health is one of Alaska’s premier mental health facilities offering hope and healing for children, teens and adults who struggle with psychiatric or substance abuse issues. We also offer military-specific care to first responders, service members, veterans and dependents at the Chris Kyle Patriots Hospital. The Mental Health Specialist is a key member of the Northstar Behavioral Health Team who is responsible for providing direct care to patients with psychiatric disorders ensuring the safety and well being of patients by supporting the maintenance of therapeutic milieu.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Helps identify patients’ problems, needs, and strengths.
  • Ensures that interventions are based on familiarity with patient history, assessment, and treatment plans.
  • Observes patients for changes that require immediate intervention and take appropriate action; continually assess behaviors that indicate changes in the patient behavior; adheres to guidelines for patients on special status i.e. suicide, sexual, assaultive behavior, or AWOL precautions.
  • Assists patients in following community rules and guidelines and in forming positive peer relationships.
  • Communicates with patients and families in a manner which projects empathy, helpfulness, and desire to positively impact patient’s treatment.
  • Maintains patient, program, department and related documentations ensuring that documentation is timely, accurate and legible.
  • Maintains a safe, orderly, and therapeutic physical environment for patients.

***$10,000 Sign-on bonus Available***

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 

MHS I: High School Diploma required. 0-4 years experience in the mental health field. Or, currently enrolled in degree program in the areas of Psychology, Social Work, Human Services, etc. Must be at least 21 years old.

MHS II: Bachelor’s Degree in psychology, social work, human services or related field preferred; or 4 years of experience in a mental health role; or combination of education and experience totaling a minimum of 4 years. Must be at least 21 years old.
