UCLA is Hiring an Executive Director Near Los Angeles, CA
The BSCRC Executive Director is responsible for the operational and administrative oversight of the Center including clinical, preclinical, and basic science programs, with a budget of more than $20M. BSCRC operations include: stem cell derivation, expansion, banking; translational and clinical manufacturing cores, as well as microscopy, high-throughput sequencing and flow cytometry cores.
As CAO, the ED oversees all funding sources supporting Center programs, including Development campaigns and extra-mural grants and contracts totaling more than $135M. Additionally, the Executive Director manages intra-mural seed research award programs resulting in a 17:1 return on investment in extra-mural research awards from agencies, including NIH, CIRM, and private foundations.
The ED supervises the communications activities of the Center, ensuring key stakeholders become and remain aware of the Center's activities and accomplishments in order to foster ongoing support. ED creates and maintains effective collaboration with units in the School of Medicine, the UCLA Health System Enterprise, other professional schools, the College, institutes and centers, collaborating institutions in the Alpha Stem Cell Clinic-Clinical Translational Science Institute, and federal and state agencies such as the FDA, NIH and CIRM.
As a member of BSCRC senior leadership, ED functions as the Chief Administrative Officer, and a member of the Center's policy-making and management team: 1) Provides leadership for the BSCRC's mission, goals, objectives, and programs from conception to completion; 2) Models commitment to the principles of collegiality, collaboration, accountability, diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice and influences staff to enthusiastically demonstrate these attributes; 3) Plans effectively with senior management to ensure that UCLA maintains excellence and preeminence in stem cell research and education. 4) Oversees the fiscal solvency of the Center including Core Resources and education/training programs.
ED's responsibilities encompass financial management; human resource management; systems development; capital improvements, space and facilities management (~41,000 total assignable square feet across 3 buildings: Factor, TLSB, and CHS); core resources management; program planning and development; research coordination; education and training; clinical program support; compliance oversight; and philanthropy development.
The role, in conjunction with the Center Faculty Director, is also responsible for strategic plan development, monitoring and assessment. The incumbent represents the Center and University on a number of advisory and leadership committees, and participates in campus and UC Systemwide as well as State, federal, and international legal and policy development. Responsibilities also include interface with critical compliance entities for all BSCRC related research, such as the Institutional Review Boards (IRB), Chancellor's Animal Research Committee (ARC), Institutional BioSafety Committee (IBC). Additionally, the position is responsible for oversight and administrative leadership for the campus Human Pluripotent Stem Cell Research Oversight (hPSCRO) committee responsible for all campus research with human pluripotent stem cells as well as education and training.

Required/Preferred
10 plus years of leadership and managerial experience in the scientific research community, with particular emphasis in scientific communication and biomedical research.
Required
Advanced degree in business administration highly preferred.

A broad-based management background in a large institutional health care environment with direct experience in research administration and successful project management of translational and preclinical research projects and grants.

Impactful leadership ability and outstanding management skills, with the aptitude to set and communicate priorities, organize and delegate responsibilities as appropriate, and successfully manage change.

Excellent financial management skills and outstanding written/verbal communication skills in order to coordinate federal, state and institutional policy, ensure research compliance, supervise grant preparation and communicate effectively about research, education and patient care programs with faculty, staff, and lay audiences from a variety of disciplines and extramural agencies.
