Department SSD: Research Administration - Staff and Temporary Employees About the Department The research development team provides comprehensive leadership in research project and proposal development for approximately 300 faculty across the Division of the Social Sciences (SSD) the Harris School of Public Policy (Harris), and the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice Administration (Crown). Job Summary The job uses specialized knowledge and breadth of expertise within the University leading to administer pre-award and/or post-award activities relating to grant and contract proposals/funding within a department or unit. The Associate Director of Research Development will be an integral part of the research development team, providing comprehensive leadership in research project and proposal development for approximately 300 faculty across the Division of the Social Sciences (SSD) the Harris School of Public Policy (Harris), and the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice Administration (Crown). The Associate Director is responsible for co-developing research funding and support strategy with faculty, leading project management and implementation of faculty research strategy, and working with faculty to pivot strategy as necessary. The Associate Director also designs, develops, and implements strategic initiatives to advance research across the social sciences and in collaboration with units across the University and National Laboratories. Responsibilities Demonstrates and maintains deep knowledge of the following: Portfolio disciplines/sub-disciplines and faculty research interests/strength (e.g., Anthropology; Comparative Human Development; History; Political Science; Psychology; Public Policy; Race, Diaspora, and Indigeneity; Sociology; Social Service; Social Thought), UChicago’s research infrastructure resources and support services (e.g., research centers and internal funding opportunities, workshop network, research computing, Library, core facilities supporting imaging and human behavior research, high performance computing); and external funding support landscape for faculty research projects, research infrastructure, and career development (e.g., federal funding agencies [NSF, NIH, DoD, IES], private foundations, fellowship programs, corporate partnerships, awards and honorifics). Leads/is responsible for development, execution, and revision (as necessary) of individualized research support and funding strategies in close partnership with faculty members and collaborative research teams. Leads the development and execution of all aspects of grant applications to federal, industry, and foundation sponsors, including: Identifying resourced and funding opportunities that align with University’s strengths, faculty expertise, and specific faculty research agendas; With faculty, translating novel ideas and concepts into competitive narratives for internal and external funding; With faculty, developing strategies for meeting broader impacts, data management, research compliance, and similar requirements; With faculty and colleagues, drafting, refining, and finalizing proposal narrative sections; Leading pre-award activity, including coordinating pre-awards grants administration activities, developing and managing project timelines, and the preparing all administrative aspects of grant and contract applications in accordance with Institutional and Agency Guidelines; and leading communication and coordination with the PIs, Co-Is, other research staff, department and University leadership, pre-award grants administration, University Research Administration, and external collaborators. Develops strategies that elevate faculty research profile and leads the nomination of faculty for prestigious external honorifics and other recognition, engaging unit Deans and central leadership as appropriate. Provides expert guidance for planning research leave funding strategy, and developing and submitting fellowship applications. Designs and executes trainings and facilitates workshops for faculty and research teams to promote effective funding proposal development, research methods training, and research innovation, and interdisciplinary collaborations. Mentors other RD staff, administrative support staff, and interns on the pre-award process and grantsmanship principles. Ensures quality service and communication to PIs and research team, maintains standardized information, develops best practices, and communicates new policies/policy changes. Leads proposal preparation in coordination with colleagues so as to (1) reliably meet all sponsor expectations; (2) make most efficient use of faculty and staff time; (3) anticipate investigators’ needs through the award life cycle; and (4) ensure compliance with University policies. Co-manages proposal library and funding opportunity resources. Develops and maintains a strong partnership with other University offices (e.g., Foundation and Corporate Relations, University Research Administration, Research Computing Center, Social Science Computing Services, Communications, Global Engagement Office, Civic Engagement Office) to optimize funding strategies and proposals. Coordinates with units across campus to strategically identify and support large-scale funding opportunities and major collaborative research centers and institutions. Uses expertise, along with knowledge of various external research organizations such as NORDP, NCURA and SRA, to understand the competitive landscape and opportunities for collaboration. Solves complex problems in support for the research enterprise within a department or unit, including pre- and/ or post-award administration for all sponsored activity. Serves as liaison between PIs, University administrative offices, and external agencies. Recommends service and communication to PIs, standardized information, best practices development, and that all faculty and research staff are aware of any new grant policies and changes. Monitors industry trends and remains current with agency and regulatory changes. Monitors department/ unit compliance with University, Divisional and Department policies and procedures and implements corrective actions for issues identified. Performs other related work as needed. Minimum Qualifications Education: Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field. --- Work Experience: Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 7 years of work experience in a related job discipline. --- Certifications: --- Preferred Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree. Degree in social sciences discipline and Advanced degree. Experience: Experience developing federal grant proposals and an academic background in a social science discipline. A broad understanding of research and scholarship in the social sciences and the ability to communicate effectively with faculty in an array of disciplines using diverse methodological approaches. Research development and grant writing experience with record of success. Professional experience in a higher education research context strongly preferred. Preferred Competencies Exceptional written communications and editing skills: writes clearly and persuasively; varies writing style according to audience. Exceptional project management skills: prioritizes and plans workflow for proposals; sets goals and objectives. Superior attention to detail: demonstrates commitment to accuracy and thoroughness; evaluates RFPs and distills requirements for faculty researchers; ensures submissions meet RFP requirements. Advanced knowledge of social science research methods. Advanced knowledge of federal and private funding landscape for social science research. Self-motivation and ability to work independently and on deadline. Strategic and analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems and make effective decisions. Professionalism, discretion, tact, and an ability to maintain confidentiality. Comfortable working collaboratively across a spectrum of offices, organizations, and people. Ability to be flexible; comfortable with skillful improvisation. Working Conditions This position is possible for full remote.
