MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

An Infection Preventionist (IP) must:

Be currently Certified in Infection Control (CIC) by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (CBIC), which indicates competence in the actual practice of infection prevention and control (IPC) and healthcare epidemiology.

 Have completed post-secondary education in a health-related field, including but not limited to medicine, nursing, laboratory technology, public health, or biology.

Have a minimum of two years of work experience as required for CIC eligibility with direct responsibility for providing consultation to healthcare departments or assigned practice settings on infection prevention and control program elements, practices, and processes, as well as products used within healthcare facilities or providing direct supervision of those who perform these responsibilities. 

Work experience, defined as active engagement in infection prevention activities, must include the following:

  1. Identification of infectious disease processes
  2. Surveillance and epidemiologic investigation
  3. Preventing and controlling the transmission of infectious agents
  4. Environment of care
  5. Cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and asepsis
  6. And at least two (2) of these three (3) components:
  7. Employee / occupational health
  8. Management and communication
  9. Education and research

MANDATORY TRAINING

The IP is responsible for completing all DOH-mandated training that applies to contracted personnel.

Description of Duties

This position is under the direct supervision of an HAIP/AS Epidemiologist. The IP communicates and collaborates on a regular basis with the supervisor, HAIP/AS Epidemiologist Supervisor, and other team members.

The IP’s specific duties are as follows:

  1. Serve as an IPC subject-matter expert for multiple projects including, but not limited to the following: the ICAR project, the Comprehensive Respiratory Protection Program Training project, P2P-PIP program, ambulatory surgery center trainings, and other projects as assigned.
  2. Coordinate meetings with contracted organizations to facilitate completion of the contract, and to receive results and deliverables.
  3. Monitor the progression of contracts and respond to and mitigate barriers to completing the contracts on time. The IP shall provide updates to supervisor about the progression of the contracts.
  4. Review IPC risk assessments, reports, data, trainings, and other deliverables to ensure they are accurate, complete, and follow sound IPC guidelines and standards.
  5. Provide IPC recommendations while working with Department staff to determine how to incorporate the findings from on-stie visits, virtual visits, assessments, competency checks, and reports into ongoing work to improve IPC activities in a variety of healthcare settings.
  6. Advise other organizations, stakeholders, contracting organizations, and healthcare facilities on ways to integrate these projects into their infection control programs.
  7. Review prepared curriculum and project plans from vendors to ensure they are technically and scientifically sound and to ensure they follow IPC standards.
  8. Advise on public health policies and regulations using IPC expertise.
  9. Develop, review, and interpret regulations, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines for IPC in non-commonwealth healthcare facilities to advise facilities and provide education.
  10. Work within a multidisciplinary team to serve as an IPC subject-matter expert.
  11. The IP will perform other duties as assigned within the HAIP/AS Program.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

The DOH reserves the right to reject or remove any unqualified contract staff if they cannot perform their duties at an acceptable level. The supplier is expected to replace the contract staff ASAP depending on the needs of DOH.

DRESS CODE

ID must always be worn and must be clearly visible and readable (other than teleworking). The IP shall dress in a manner that conveys professionalism; typically, in a “business casual” style when appearing online or in person.

  8. Prepares and submits thorough and accurate reports in a timely manner.
  9. Submits incident reports and work-related injury paperwork in a timely manner.

  2. Recognizes/anticipates needs of contracting organizations, colleagues, stakeholders, nursing homes, personal care homes, and other healthcare facilities.

  5. Organizes files to easily access information.
  6. Monitors contract performance to easily report on progress.
  7. Integrates ICAR findings with Department infection control and outbreak response work.
  8. Coordinates with multiple organizations to accomplish the same goals.
  9. Seek guidance and permission when appropriate.

  6. Maintains patient and hospital confidentiality.
  7. Submits time sheets and travel expense reports in a timely manner.
