Registered Nurse/ Birth Assistant
The registered nurse (RN) Birth Assistant provides care for the client and family during labor, birth and postpartum period at Tru OB/GYN & Birth Center. The Birth Assistant may also participate in the provision of extended postpartum care, home visits, client education programs, community outreach, and center operations in collaboration with the Administrative and/or Clinical Director.
Currently licensed as an RN in the state of New Jersey
Current adult CPR and NRP certifications
Experienced in Labor and Delivery nursing, with antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn, and lactation services
Self-directed and committed to providing superior care and education to Tru families and assisting the CNMs in the provision of care
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Orientation of employees contracted as Birth Assistants will include assessment and documentation of competency in maternal/newborn nursing and labor support skills specified in the Birth Assistant Job Description and the Policies and Procedures Manual of Tru OB/GYN & Birth Center.
- Clinical staff is expected to maintain current certification in adult CPR and NRP.
- Drills will be arranged regularly by the Clinical Director to keep staff adept at “non-routine” skills such as fire and other evacuation, resuscitation, and other medical emergencies.
- Staff is expected to participate in the presentation of in-service programs.
- Continuing Education is encouraged for all staff in their areas of responsibility.
- The nurse will be expected to have a cell phone available at all times while on-call.
- Intrapartum care.
Once called to the center, the nurse will, at the direction of the CNM, provide or conduct:
- Labor support (i.e., fluids, positioning, tub bath, sibling support).
- Supplies and/or equipment as needed to complete the set-up of the room for birth
- Monitoring of vital signs and fetal heart tones
- Administer medications and initiate IV access when needed.
- Assist with resuscitation if needed.
- Assist with third stage or other maternal emergency as needed (fundal massage, administration of medications, prepare IV therapy, call emergency services).
- RN may care for patient in early labor under the direction of the CNM.
- Monitor vital signs for mother and newborn.
- Assist mother with comfort measures.
- Assist with establishing breast feeding.
- Deliver cord blood and other specimens to designated lab if indicated.
- Postpartum period until discharge.
- Ongoing assessment of mother: lochia, voiding, oral hydration and nutrition, mothering adjustment, physical needs.
- Ongoing assessment of newborn: respiratory status, color, temperature, heart rate, neurological status, feeding, activity.
- Discharge.
- Review early home care instructions.
- Assist family in preparations for going home.
- Accompany family to vehicle.
- Terminal cleaning and restocking of birth room. This must be done before birth assistant leaves the Center.
- Report to the Birth Center Administrator of items noted to be in short supply, or facility issues noted while cleaning. This is accomplished via the Birth Assistant’s signature and any notes on the Terminal Cleaning checklist.
- Ongoing postpartum follow-up.
- Consultation with CNM for any issues as indicated.
- Perform fetal non-stress tests.
- Assist clients with self-care and collection of specimens as needed.
- Phone triage during office hours.
- Continuing Competency.
- Maintains current certification in CPR and neonatal resuscitation.
- Attendance at Center staff in-service programs and emergency drills.
- Nurse will be expected to participate in transfer review meetings and to assist in providing in-service programs to the staff.
- The nurse will be responsible for continuous quality improvement activities as assigned by the Clinical Director.
- Responsible to the Administrative Director for all conduct, duties, and responsibilities.
- Functions clinically under the direct supervision of the attending CNM and carries out orders as needed.

Pay: $50.00 - $58.00 per hour
