TRI-STATE GENERATION & TRANSMISSION ASSOCIATION, INC. is Hiring a Power Plant Operator Near Fort Lupton, CO

POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for monitoring, attending and operating all combustion turbines, steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators and auxiliary equipment at the J.M. Shafer Station.Also responsible for performing skilled maintenance work on mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment, as qualifications allow.Supports shift Senior Technician/Operations or Maintenance Supervisor in operating a combined cycle generating facility in conformance with facility's Power Purchase Agreements, Operating Agreements, plant procedures, environmental regulations and safety procedures with minimal guidance or assistance.Keeps Senior Technician/Foreman fully informed of plant operating status, unusual conditions, and faulty equipment.

Note:

There is one position available and the position will be filled at one of four job grade levels: Power Plant Operator (Combined Cycle) I, job grade T2; Power Plant Operator (Combined Cycle) II, job grade T3; Power Plant Operator (Combined Cycle) III, job grade T4, Power Plant Operator (Combined Cycle) IV, job grade T5, or Journey Level Power Plant Operator (Combined Cycle), job grade T6. This decision will be based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate selected, and Tri-State business needs at the time of hire.

Detailed Description

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support shift Senior Technician/Operations or Maintenance Supervisor in operating a combined cycle generating facility in conformance with facility's Power Purchase Agreements, Operating Agreements, plant procedures, environmental regulations and safety procedures with minimal guidance or assistance.Keep Senior Technician/Foreman fully informed of plant operating status, unusual conditions, and faulty equipment.
  • Responsible for maintaining and/or repairing a combined cycle generating facility and all associated auxiliary and support equipment with minimal guidance or assistance, and for performing overall plant preventive and corrective maintenance as assigned.
  • Following satisfactory completion of required training, handle hazardous material/waste as required.
  • Learn and apply safe, effective use of hand tools, precision equipment and specialized test equipment used in maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of plant equipment.
  • Complete and maintain first aid and CPR certification.
  • Ensure adherence to spill prevention and emergency response procedures.
  • Communicate verbally and/or in writing detailed status of plant conditions to fellow Combined Cycle Technicians at shift turnover.
  • Perform water chemistry analysis on various plant water systems; ensure water chemistry is within proper control ranges; and make adjustments to water chemistry, as needed, by controlling chemical feed and/or blowdown rates.
  • Utilize the computerized maintenance management system (Asset Suite) to manage inventory, work management and procurement activities.
  • Responsible for operating fluid valves, as required to maintain proper system operation and mechanical isolation and for operating electric circuit breakers, as required, to maintain proper system operation and electrical isolation.
  • Operate and/or maintain water purification system in accordance with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and plant procedures, and monitor demineralized water to ensure quality is within acceptable limits.
  • Diagnose cause of plant equipment malfunctions or failures and take appropriate remedial action as authorized or required.
  • Read, understand and comply with all regulatory procedures and facility safety programs, and maintain adherence to all plant environmental permits.
  • Work shift hours, overtime, and irregular hours as needed to support reliable operation of the facility, which may involve, from time to time, working hours which will be determined on short notice, based on needs of the facility.
  • Perform general plant housekeeping, which involves maintaining the cleanliness of all areas of the plant and control room, or other housekeeping duties as assigned.
  • Maintain plant security in conformance with site procedures.
  • Perform Collateral Duties in conformance with Collateral Duty Program, as assigned by Plant Management.
  • Adhere to and demonstrate compliance with appropriate electric utility industry regulatory requirements. Attain knowledge and remain knowledgeable of development in regulations, laws, standards and best practices applicable to the functional area including, but not limited to, Standards of Conduct, Environmental, Employment Law, NERC Reliability Standards and Safety.Must be familiar with, and comply with, all aspects of Corporate Policy C-54, Compliance.

REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Training
  • A High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Associate's degree in a related discipline; or equivalent power plant operations and maintenance experience.
  • Successfully Complete Operator Qualification Program.
  • Maintain CPR certification, spill/waste handling training requirements and the ability to perform CPR and apply spill/waste training, respirator training and testing, and obtain opacity certification as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:
  • Must have proficient mechanical and electrical troubleshooting and repair skills and ability to solve related practical problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to make competent decisions in emergency situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and written, including ability to write operating/maintenance procedures, work requests, purchase requisitions and routine reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret mechanical/electrical drawings, technical manuals and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams/Drawing (P&ID's).
  • Proficiency in computerized maintenance management system consistent with established procedure and have demonstrated basic computer literacy.
  • Must have a satisfactory work record.
  • Ability to conduct training of others in plant operation and maintenance procedures.
Experience:
  • Requires at least one (1) year of experience as a Combined Cycle Technician IV.
  • Four (4) years of related power plant experience, combustion turbine experience desired.
  • Those with less experience will be hired at the Power Plant Operator (Combined Cycle) I, II III, or IV job grade level, as appropriate.

Other:
  • Willingness to work extra or irregular hours, shift work, weekends, holidays, call out and travel as required; and willingness to be on call 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.
  • Willingness to work with high voltages, obtain switching certification, and perform high voltage switching.
  • Must reside within 20 miles of the base location.
  • Have good health and physical ability adequate for strenuous work, including ability to wear a respirator.
  • Must be able to demonstrate that he or she can perform all of the essential functions of the position.
