TN Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse... is Hiring a Psychiatric Technician Near Bolivar, TN

Western Mental Health Institute:

The Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (DMHSAS) is charged with planning for and promoting an array of services from prevention and early intervention to resiliency and recovery. The Department oversees four Regional Mental Health Institutes (RMHIs) and contracts with mental health and substance abuse community providers across the state to offer services to Tennesseans. The Department manages a budget of more than $300 million, with funding from dedicated fees, revenue, federal grants, and state general fund appropriations.

Western Mental Health Institute(WMHI) is Tennessee's third largest State mental health hospital located in Bolivar Tennessee and has been serving 24 counties in West Tennessee since1889. Hospitalizations are on a voluntary or involuntary basis, or patients can also be referred by the court system for pre-trial evaluations. The hospital offers 2 short-term care units, 4 long-term care units, and therapeutic treatment units for a total of 150 beds.

Job Responsibilities:

Under nursing supervision, Psychiatric Technicians at Western Mental Health Institute (WMHI) provide direct care to patients in Short Term Care Programs; Extended Care Programs; and, Forensic Care Programs for those who have been diagnosed with a mental illness and have forensic charges. Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Providing daily living care for patients such as bathing and personal hygiene; assisting with dressing (clothes) and feeding.
  • Having the ability to move, lift, and/or transfer patients using sliding boards, wheel chairs, or other required equipment; as well as provide supervised medical assistance, such as, but not limited to, obtaining vital signs and weights of patients.
  • Escorting patients to appointments and other appropriate areas; and, they provide individualized teaching and lead activities for patients.
  • Making rounds according to policy and procedure to account for each assigned patient.
  • Providing verbal de-escalation of agitated patients.
  • Performing CPR and other emergency responses and techniques when necessary. All necessary training including CPR and Patient De-escalation will be provided on-site.

Shifts Available:

Psychiatric Technicians work 7.5 hour shifts - 5 Days/ Nights per Week. Standard shifts are:

  • 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (Days)
  • 2:30p.m. – 11:00 p.m. (2nd Shift) - Additional Pay for 2nd Shift Work
  • 10:30 p.m. - 7:00 a.m. (Nights) - Additional Pay for Night Shift Work

Required Education:

  • Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

  • A valid motor vehicle operator license may be required.
  • Must have the ability to lift 30 – 50 lbs. and perform repetitive tasks consisting of bending, stooping, standing and walking.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Mental Health and/or Corrections experience

Base Salary:

  • Annual: $27,324 ($2,277 monthly) - Pay rate effective July 1, 2019
  • Annual salary is $28,452 for those with CNA license or applicable college degree – Pay rate effective July1, 2019
  • Overtime is available
