THOR Solutions, LLC is Hiring a Communications Specialist Near Middletown, RI

THOR Solutions is actively seeking a Communications Specialist to support the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport’s Public Affairs and Protocol Office, in Middletown, RI. In this role, the individual will execute a variety of communications and analysis efforts, supporting the Awards Program and Portal News, and the NUWC Division Newport digital newsletter of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport.

The candidate’s responsibilities may include (but are not limited to) performing or supporting the following actions:

  • Interview award candidates and/or their supervisors to gather content.
  • Research and utilize available platforms to gather pertinent information on nominee.
  • Coordinate and communicate with interviewees.
  • Prepare written content and images for articles and other communication products.
  • Collaborate with Portal News editor on all stories, images, placement, etc.
  • Interface with technical writers and photographers including, government personnel and contractors.
  • Support ongoing archiving efforts – posted stories and images – in digital format and on DVDs.
  • Communicate with manager on status of award package development.
  • Provides support to the Public Affairs Office and Protocol Office, as needed, for command events.

Security Clearance Requirements:

  • Must already possess or be eligible to obtain a DoD SECRET security clearance, and maintain it for the duration of employment.

Required Education, Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: 

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, digital media, or related field.
    • Additional formal education or training that is directly relevant to this particular type of work is preferred.
  • At least four (4) years of recent, relevant experience performing similar duties as an editor/writer.
    • Experience gained in a U.S. Navy/DoD environment is highly preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft SharePoint, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Adobe Photoshop, and Microsoft Office (especially Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).
  • Working level knowledge and adherence to writing and editing style guides, including: current Associated Press Stylebook, U.S. Navy Style Guide, Division Newport online acronym guide, and online dictionaries.
  • Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, to all levels of the customer organization.
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures, meet deadlines, and multitask in a fast-paced environment.
