Description

Position Summary
Under the direction of the Blending Supervisors the Chemical Rail Switching Technician work with the evening rail switch crew to perform the safe switching of railcars, based on customer requests. Switch crews are responsible for performing jobs efficiently and following all company and customer safety rules and completing corresponding paperwork at the end of every shift.
Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Examines rail switch list to plan railcars to be spotted, separated, loaded, and/or ready for shipment.
  • Visually inspects the railcar before transfer to ensure that it is mechanically sound.
  • Inspects for any leaks, gauges railcars, and completes required paperwork.
  • Communicates with rail team members, leadership, and customer service contacts.
  • Safely assist with track mobile operation and movement.
  • Regularly operates locomotive in a congested area and must use considerable caution to prevent damage to rail cars or accidents to employees.
  • Uncouples loaded cars at their destination or uncouples and distributes empty cars to siding or to loading areas.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with the Locomotive Engineer through use of hand signals or two-way radio.
  • Moves switches to route cars and signals Locomotive Engineer to start or stop cars.
  • Must be able to operate railcar handbrakes and rail track switches.
  • Positions railcars on track to unload or load railcars.
  • Ability to read and understand daily switch list and execute safely.
  • Operates switches and directs flow of cars in rail yard. Monitors switch points to ensure switch is properly aligned.
  • Maintains area in a neat and orderly manner and reports work hazards.
  • Observes, interprets & relays hand/lantern/other signals affecting movement of the train.
  • Judges & controls speed & clearance distance of cars.
  • Prepare required daily reports and switch lists, manually or with a computer.
  • Inspect the condition of the train and equipment in movement and while stationary.
  • Couple air and electrical connections between locomotives when making up trains.
  • Assist with other projects and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Exhibits and practices the Third Coast Way fundamental behaviors.
Skills and Competencies:
  • Minimum 2 years' experience with Rail Switching and Track mobile operations.
  • Must be willing to work 3pm-11pm evening shift.
  • Detail oriented with excellent organization skills.
  • Proficient in working with Microsoft Office Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Ability to work within a team or independently as required
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills are required

Physical Requirements
  • While performing the duties of this job, the team member is regularly required to use their hands to handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.
  • The team member frequently is required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
  • The team member is occasionally required to sit.
  • The team member must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift 25 pounds.
  • Able to climb on railcars/ISO containers to check seals if necessary.
