Scope of Job
To provide intermediate / journeyman level technical skills dealing with the construction, installation, operations and maintenance of fire and life safety systems and their components. Responsible for installation, maintenance, modification and repair of fire alarm, fire sprinkler, fire suppression and other life safety systems.
Description of Duties
- Performs preventive and routine maintenance on campus fire detection/alarms, battery operated emergency lighting systems, and fire suppression systems to include dry pipe, wet pipe, pre-action, clean agent kitchen fire suppression, smoke evacuation, and other life safety systems.
- Monitors and maintains the operations and integrity of fire and life safety systems.
- Responsible for troubleshooting and correcting problems with all life safety systems to include fire detection/alarm, fire suppression systems, fire pumps, fire system troubles and fire alarm responds. Conducts follow up investigations to determine the cause of fire system alarms and to ensure/verify the proper operations of fire and life safety systems.
- Performs the installation of fire detection and suppression system devices.
- Performs code required maintenance, testing and inspection of campus fire and life safety systems.
- Evaluates codes for compliance with applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and National Electrical Code (NEC) codes and other applicable standards.
- Completes departmental reports and documentation to include gathering data through field measurements and observation, analysis and various research methods.
- Reads and interprets blue prints, schematics, and specifications to maintain functionality to campus systems, ensure compliance, and provide input for campus projects.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education
High school graduation or equivalent.
Preferred Education
Associates degree or certificate in electronics or electrical trade.
Licenses/Certifications
As condition of employment this position requires the applicant to be authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle for Official University Business. Per University of Texas System Policy 157, applicants will be subject to a motor vehicle record check for their most recent thirty-six (36) month history. Out of State Drivers are required to submit a 36-month history MVR from their prior State of residence(s).
Must have Texas State Alarm Certification or National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies Fire Alarm Systems Certification within 12 months of hire.

Required Experience
Two (2) years of experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of fire alarm and/or fire suppression systems or electronics, or Associates Degree in Electronics or related technical trade and one year of required experience.
Preferred Experience
Additional years of experience with fire suppression systems. Knowledge and experience in Simplex and Siemens fire alarm systems and/or other fire protection systems.
Equipment
Knowledge and skills in the use of electronics, fire alarms, fire suppression, and related equipment, motorized carts and vehicles. Personal computer, standard office equipment, Multi-meter, and hand tools.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. May work in areas where special hazards exist. May spend long periods of time standing or sitting. Must be able to perform moderate lifting (25 lbs.), bending, and reaching to move equipment, etc. Exposure to outside environment such as hot, dry, dusty, wet, and cold environments. Some work in restricted spaces will be required. Must be able to work while wearing a respirator.
This is a critical position. Emergency repair call-ins during non-normal working hours to include weekends and holidays and exposure to inclement weather.
