The Seattle Times is Hiring a Database Administrator Near Seattle, WA

The Seattle Times, a family-owned news organization, is seeking an experienced Database Administrator to join our Information Technology team. The Database Administrator is responsible for the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of database systems and providing advanced support for databases and data pipelines. This person must also maintain up-to-date knowledge of applicable technology, anticipate the company’s needs, and make recommendations as needed. This position will participate in product roadmap discussions and identify key areas for database improvements in the product and incorporates these goals into ongoing & future development initiatives.

Essential Job Functions

  • Fulfill day-to-day operational, administration, and support tasks associated with database servers, databases, and data pipelines
  • Participate in the 24x7 on-call support rotation
  • Provide troubleshooting and support for database systems, databases, and data pipelines
  • Control and limit server, database, and data pipeline access in compliance with data security policies and best practices
  • Build, deploy, maintain, and support database servers and databases
  • Ensure high database availability using best practices for database maintenance, monitoring, performance analysis, query tuning, backup / restore and disaster recovery
  • Serve as technical lead for moderately complicated database-related projects
  • Ensure technical documentation and diagrams remain current and accurate
  • Additional database system projects or duties as requested or assigned

Job Requirements

  • Experience: 3-6 years administering or developing database systems in an enterprise with increasing responsibilities
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/ Information Management or Database Management or equivalent demonstrated work experience
  • Experience as Systems Analyst or in Systems Integration, Database Development, or Systems Administration
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server administration
  • Familiarity with SSIS, SSRS
  • Working knowledge using ANSI SQL and vendor specific dialects, such as T-SQL
  • Strong analytical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Strong facilitation, interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills
  • Ability to effectively prioritize work, completing daily support responsibilities and project driven tasks in a timely manner
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team, business partners and vendors
  • Works independently using established policies and procedures as guidelines, with minimum supervision

Work Location | While this is a remote work opportunity, finalists must be current or future residents of Washington state to be considered.
