The Salvation Army Eastern Territory is Hiring a General Accountant Near Hartford, CT

Overview

Location: Divisional Headquarters, Finance Department (Hartford, CT)

Status: Exempt, Full-time

Hours Per Week: 40 minimally

Schedule: Mon-Fri; 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, may vary depending on need 

Scope & Purpose of Position: Reports to the Finance Controller in directing the principles, practices, and procedures of accounting within The Salvation Army’s Southern New England Division. Instrumental in maintaining accountability of the financial resources of the business and safeguarding investor assets.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the backup for the preparation and processing of payroll.
  • Assist in analyzing funds held at Territorial Headquarters (THQ), and assure proper recording of funds and preparation of year-end distribution.
  • Assist in the preparation of Consolidation. Work with Finance Controller to prepare all schedules and analyses, and provide all documentation required by THQ. Gain an understanding of the process and be able to back up as necessary.
  • Assist in the preparation of work papers for all audits such as government agencies, outside auditors, internal auditors, United Way, etc.
  • Assure enough funds are available for daily and immediate future requirements.
  • Close accounting records in a timely manner and distribute reports; review applicable month-end records and reports to assure accuracy and conformity with accounting standards; assist others in understanding by providing a detailed analysis.
  • Complete bank reconciliations and related journal entries and adjustments; bank statements must be reconciled to the general ledger on a timely basis and approved by the Finance Controller and the Divisional Secretary for Business Administration.
  • Direct supervision of Accountants (receivable and payable).
  • Prepare financial accounting for the construction, purchase, and sale of a property.
  • Maintain detailed work papers detailing the above and prepare the additions and/or removals from property, plant, and equipment ledgers processed and maintained at THQ.
  • Review ledgers to assure accuracy and prepare and process necessary journal entries to record property transactions.
  • Responsible for administration and processing of backup petty cash fund.
  • Review and coding of Corporate Credit Card transactions through the Smart Data system.

Qualifications

  • Must embrace, support, and reflect well on The Salvation Army’s mission and values.
  • BA/BS in accounting/finance preferred or associate’s degree with 5-10 years of experience in accounting/finance or significant years of specific experience in accounting/finance especially in a non-profit environment.
  • Positive can-do attitude and a sleeves rolled up approach to leadership.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple projects with grace and professionalism
  • Keen attention to detail and accuracy, adaptable and organized.
  • Experience supervising other employees is highly preferred.
  • Great presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be computer literate, particularly regarding accounting software, spreadsheets, and MS office.
  • Must complete all required trainings upon hire.
  • Must have the ability to solve complex accounting issues/problems with a firm grasp of generally accepted accounting principles with an understanding of FASB pronouncements related to not-for-profit entities.
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to work independently with little supervision
  • Valid driver’s license which is free of restriction by both the granting State and Chesterfield Insurance.
