About The Park School

The Park School is a Pre-K to Grade 8 independent school located on 34 acres in Brookline, MA. Although not a new position, the opportunities and responsibilities associated with the Director of Facilities are being redefined to emphasize the importance of this leadership role in the Park community. The Director of Facilities will be a key partner to the Assistant Head of School for Finance and Operations in determining strategic priorities and leading the maintenance, custodial, and transportation teams in support of the School’s mission and goals. It is an exciting time at Park with master planning on the horizon, a healthy fiscal budget dedicated to operations and capital improvements, and the capacity to grow the size of the maintenance team once a vision for the team has been determined by the new director. 

The Director of Facilities is the head of the school’s maintenance department and reports to the Assistant Head of School for Finance and Operations. This full-time, twelve month Administrative position will be responsible for proactively managing the physical plant, overseeing capital projects, developing and maintaining Park’s security protocols and emergency planning, and fostering good relations with the Town of Brookline. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Community and Department Leadership

  • Effectively communicate with all members of the community
  • Actively participate in the strategic development and management of the campus (e.g. master planning, zoning compliance, utilities services, energy management) 
  • Participate as an active member of the Buildings and Grounds (B&G) subcommittee of the Board of Trustees
  • Collaborate with program and staff leadership, to understand special needs and maintain quality of support to the program (e.g. division heads, athletics, technology, food service, and summer programs)
  • Coordinate and direct the maintenance, cleaning, and repair of the School’s buildings and grounds and identify opportunities for improvements in alignment with the School’s philosophy and goals
  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate twelve member maintenance, custodial, and transportation team to ensure high standards of performance and maintain good morale and team coordination
  • Demonstrate culturally-aware practices in the management and support of a diverse staff and ensure that respect for diversity, equity, and inclusion is emphasized as a core value of the School
  • Provide and encourage training opportunities for maintenance team to maintain safety standards and adhere to compliance requirements
  • Foster good relations with Town of Brookline officials 

Operations Management

  • Organize, schedule and supervise all repair and construction projects, with sensitivity to school seasonality and operational needs
  • Oversee distribution of work orders and evaluate ticketing system to identify systemic or repeated issues
  • Oversee regular preventive maintenance on all building systems, including Energy Management Systems (EMS), roofs, finishes, safety and monitoring systems, school vehicles, and other equipment
  • Evaluate opportunities for outsourcing of certain tasks, and where appropriate, select third-party contractors and manage the fulfillment of their contract obligations, including quality control of their work
  • Coordinate and regularly update the School’s security protocols and maintain a emergency preparedness plans
  • Oversee school transportation including daily shuttles (e.g. Park “T” shuttle, Big West, and Big East), athletic teams, and field trips 
  • Oversee regular cleaning of the School and manage custodial team
  • Coordinate support from maintenance team for summer programming including pool maintenance, transportation, and programming setup (e.g. classroom supply distribution and field lining)
  • Monitor and analyze campus energy consumption, identify energy conservation opportunities, recommend adjustments, and calculate impacts of improvements
  • Coordinate facilities support to campus events (e.g. setups and takedowns)
  • Supervise and coordinate snow removal 

Administrative Duties

  • Create and manage annual $1.6 million operating budget for school operations, in conjunction with Assistant Head of School for Finance and Operations
  • Create and manage long-range capital budgets, in conjunction with Assistant Head of School for Finance and Operations and with advice from B&G Committee, and provide periodic reports 
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory requirements, including work safety regulations
  • Oversee periodic inspections of all building systems as needed for compliance (boiler, fire alarms, elevators, etc.) and serve as point of contact with regulatory bodies having jurisdiction

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent communication (oral and written), organization, and leadership skills
  • Proven personnel management skills and contractor management experience, with aptitude to judge quality of performance in all major technical trades and general knowledge in technical trade skills (carpentry, mechanical, electrical, structural)
  • Strong technology user with skills in Excel, Word, Google docs, and aptitude to operate EMS (Energy Management System) and web-based forecasting systems (e.g. School Dude). Related experience with databases necessary to apply the CMMS features.
  • Commitment to the School’s needs and readiness to respond 24/7/365 as reasonable and necessary
  • Ability to develop and manage operations and capital budgets
  • Experience in cleaning schools and safe cleaning methods
  • Experience in the operation of heating systems/boilers and air conditioning systems
  • Experience with security systems and surveillance cameras
  • Must be able to work at a computer for extended periods of time and be able to move freely across the campus

Qualifications

  • Ten years of related technical work experience is required, including a minimum of two years experience in an educational setting. Related experience could entail construction, plant engineering, or facility management.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Facility Management, Business Administration, Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management or related field preferred. College or trade school degree or equivalent experience required, preferably in one of the following disciplines: Industrial or Facility Management; Construction Management; Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering; or Architecture
  • Demonstrated success in a diverse school setting
