Job Description

Job Title:Custodian 

Salary Level:Hourly

Status:Part or Full Time

Shift:Various hours including weekends & holidays

Department:Facilities 

Reports to: Facilities and Operations Manager 

Summary: 

The Custodian keeps the museum and its grounds in a clean, safe and orderly condition. Working in The Leonardo’s LEED-GOLD Certified building the successful candidate will use environmentally-friendly cleaning products to perform cleaning duties, such as cleaning floors, shampooing rugs, washing walls and glass, and removing trash and recycling. Duties may also include performing routine maintenance activities, notifying management of need for repairs, and cleaning snow or debris from sidewalks. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming them.
  • Gather and empty trash and recycling.
  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
  • Clean and polish furniture and fixtures.
  • Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, and squeegees.
  • Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment.
  • Mix water and chemicals in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications.
  • Steam-clean or shampoo carpets.
  • Finish, and polish floors.
  • Follow green cleaning procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, in order to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
  • Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks.
  • Mow and trim lawns and shrubbery, using mowers and hand and power trimmers, and clear debris from grounds.
  • Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas, using snow blowers, and snow shovels, and spread snow melting chemicals.
  • Track and maintain adequate stores of all cleaning and maintenance supplies, including, but not limited to, all necessary trash bags, paper goods, ice melt products, keeping the facilities manager informed of any needed items, supplies and equipment.
  • Clean galleries and rest rooms after an exhibit opening or special event before the museum opens to the public the following day.
  • Attend and participate in workshops, training sessions and other meetings
  • Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, and scaffolding to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings.
  • Clean and return events equipment to proper locations, ensure it is not left in fire exits like stairwells. Make sure A/V equipment is properly handled and maintained and alert the Facilities Director if anything is damaged or if additional supplies are needed.
  • When working events, do regular sweeps to check for spills and for security purposes. 
  • If last to leave the building while working after hours, ensure lights and equipment are turned off including: Event Center and floor lights, exhibits spotlights, all A/V equipment, and auditorium equipment.
  • Maintain cleaning equipment such as vacuums with new filters, assure the rotor and brush are cleaned, and hoses remain unclogged.
  • Maintain drains around the building. Pour water weekly down floor drains in restrooms and use enzyme regularly in janitorial closet sinks. Use drain cleaner and/or drain snake to unclog drains. 

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • Provides good customer service in interactions with the public.
  • Follows policies and procedures; Supports organization's goals and values.
  • Is consistently at work and on time.
  • Knowledge of basic computer software applications and email (preferred, but not required).
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. 
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. 
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

Training and Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and at least six months of related experience.
  • Green cleaning experience preferred.
  • Floor buffing experience preferred.
