About This Position

The Clinical Social Worker will assess patient's psycho-social needs and provide counseling services to individuals as part of a federally funded study of a nonpharmacological study of cognitive behavioral therapy intervention for posttraumatic headaches.

This is an on-site position assigned to the Tripler Army Medical Center on Schofield Barracks in Honolulu, HI. A thorough government background check will be required. 

About The Project

Project MARCH: Multisite Advancement of Research on Chronic Posttraumatic Headache

Background: Posttraumatic Headache is a growing and disabling problem. There are no available guidelines for treating posttraumatic headache, and there is extraordinary variability in treatment practices as a result. 

Aim: Determine the efficacy of Clinic-based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CCBT; using our manualized intervention) and Telemedicine-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TCBT; using our manualized intervention) for posttraumatic headache (PTH) compared to treatment as usual (TAU) across seven geographically-dispersed treatment sites.

Salary Range

$70,000 - $85,000. Salaries are determined based on several factors including external market data, internal equity, and the candidate’s related knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.

Responsibilities

• Provides behavioral health (BH) screenings, assessment, and direct care, specialty referral and longitudinal BH care management
• Provides thorough assessment of clients, issues, and situations to design and develop a comprehensive treatment plan for the resolution of complex social, economic and psychosocial problems
• Conducts psychosocial evaluations and provides therapeutic interventions including crisis counseling to individuals, groups and families as needed to facilitate case management and optimize care
• Counsels patients using a manualized intervention for posttraumatic headache
• Evaluates the impact of diagnosis or lack of diagnosis with unexplained chronic symptoms on individual and family system as well as assess patient's functioning within work, family and on a daily basis and identify areas needing continued support and resources in order to assist patient in treatment
• Provides services to high-risk populations including service members pending medical discharge due to physical and or behavioral health illnesses
• Develops, implements, and maintains in partnership with clients and other health care providers and community resources as applicable, an optimum, comprehensive care plan
• Coordinates services for those clients who move out of region to ensure continuity of care
• Advocate for clients as needed, and assist with negotiating systems to acquire resources and services, including assisting with paperwork completion, while consistently demonstrating a caring attitude that exceeds the client's expectations for services
• Educates clients, their families, commanders and health care staff on community resources including information and referral for financial, housing, educational, employment and childcare resources as required by client's needs assessment
• Performs various administrative duties in support of the services provided, e.g. conducting seminars and training programs for out-patient, and community clientele
• Attends and participates in patient care conferences, team conferences, professional staff conferences and any other appropriate professional activities
• Performs on-call behavioral health services and provides crisis intervention when appropriate
• Reviews and evaluates professional records to ensure compliance IAW hospital and Departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
• Cognizant of and adhere to all applicable regulations and guidelines
• Performs development duties that assist current programs managed or developed to help insure work efforts are successful
• May serve as subject matter expert to the research team and provide guidance on the preparation of technical progress reports
• Complete CBBT and research related trainings required by the research protocol to ensure compliance, as well as other trainings mandated by the military facility.

Qualifications

• Independent Clinical Social Work license or Professional Counselor license, to include Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, from recognized state with regulatory authority required.
• Master’s degree in Social Work
• Two (2) years post-graduate supervision experience is required.
• Experience with military and veteran populations is preferred.
• Demonstrate competence in oral and written communication.
• Must be organized, attentive to detail, and possess a positive, friendly and professional demeanor.
• Ability to independently conduct psychosocial treatment to military service members and veterans from various socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, educational and other diverse backgrounds.
• Knowledge and experience in the use of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures.
• Ability to adhere to research protocols and willingness to complete trainings preparatory to research (e.g., CITI, Good Clinical Practice, etc.).
• Computer skills including at least intermediate level experience with Excel and Microsoft Office Software.
